Calgary, Alberta, Canada University of Calgary Full time

Description

The Department of Medicine in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Coordinator. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Coordinator reports to the Principal Investigator and is directed by the team of two awarded grants: LiveRx - Alberta Innovates (AI) for the Partnership for Research and Innovation in the Health System (PRIHS) to implement a province wide program to work towards eradicating Hepatitis C (HCV) in Alberta, and HbcCare - Alberta Health Cancer Research for Screening and Prevention (CRSP) funding program focused on implementing a province-wide program to help reduce the burden of hepatocellular (liver) cancer (HCC) in underserved populations by more effectively finding and treating mainly hepatitis B (HBV) but also HCV.

Both programs have distinct but overlapping populations to be engaged and ultimate goals:

(i) The goal of LiveRx is to optimize pre-existing infrastructure, community-based capacity, and pharmacist scope of practice to achieve HCV cure in partnership with public, private and community sectors across Alberta. This program will work towards establishing the most effective, efficient, cost-effective and sustainable ways to enable HCV test-treat-cure through a programmatic approach focused on providing access to vulnerable and marginalized Albertans where they have trusted relationships with community-based health and social service providers. The plan is that the findings from the work done in this program will inform sustainability and future scale planning.

(ii) The goal of HbcCare is to optimize pre-existing infrastructure and community-based capacity across Alberta to screen people for viral hepatitis (mainly HBV), which is an important risk factor for the development of liver cancer (HCC).

These programs utilize dried blood spot (DBS) testing to screen for HCV and HBV in community settings (e.g. not for profit community-based organizations [CBO's] and associated outreach capacities, Primary Care Networks [PCN's], and pharmacies) to provide timely and accessible care to at risk groups in Alberta, with the goal of treating HCV and HBV to improve liver-related adverse outcomes, including preventing HCC development. These programs involve developing and implementing community-based outreach programs to improve understanding of liver health, viral hepatitis, and the need to be tested for HBV and HCV to improve health outcomes and prevent HCC development. The specific populations who will be engaged in HbcCare differ from those mostly engaged in the LiveRx program (i.e., mainly vulnerable and marginalized populations), and include groups known to be at increased risk for HBV infection based on immigration to Canada from countries with known, high prevalence of HBV in the population such as new immigrants (coming from developing countries/regions [e.g., Southeast Asia, China, Africa, Middle East] and refugees.
