**Description**

The Ward Summer Student Research program provides an opportunity to experience a unique interdisciplinary mentorship experience. Successful applicants will have opportunities to work with their mentor on a research project, attend our Lunch ‘n’ Learns, and participate in the annual Ward Summer Student Research Day where they will have an opportunity to present their research to the organization and its visitors.

The Ward summer student will work under the mentorship of Dr. Timothy Ross. The student will assist with research projects oriented towards:

- Understanding how families living with childhood disability experience their community environments
- Using the families’ input to advance more socially just, diverse, and inclusive communities, and/or
- Advancing more accessible and inclusive pediatric health care environments

Research topics that the incoming student may engage include school travel and education access, inclusive play, public transit, urban planning policy and process, and the intersection of race and disability experiences. The incoming student can expect to perform tasks that contribute to some of the following:

- A literature review pertaining to:
(a) childhood disability and a transportation sub-field to be specified later,

(b) advancing more inclusive health care for Indigenous people, or

(c) advancing inclusive play opportunities
- Data collection and analysis for an ongoing study of housing experiences of people living with developmental disability
- Research on qualitative methods and methodologies
- Content preparation for academic publications, professional reports, and/or knowledge translation products

**Compensation Details**

The program runs for 12 weeks from May 1, 2023 - July 21, 2023. Students will be paid $15.50 per hour based on a 37.5 hour week (full-time), less statutory deductions, including 4% in lieu of vacation and relevant statutory holiday pay. Students will be paid biweekly through payroll.

**Key Responsibilities**
- Data gathering, entry, and analysis
- Academic and professional report writing
- General administrative and clerical functions to support projects
- Interaction with families and project team members across organizations
- Additional duties assigned as required

**Qualifications**
- Enrolled in year 2-4 of an undergraduate program
- Excellent GPA
- Excellent writing skills
- Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to be a team player
- Previous experience with children with disabilities is an asset
- Previous experience in (or, demonstrable interest) in urban planning, landscape architecture, inclusive design, and/or community engagement is an asset
- Some exposure to qualitative research and policy frameworks
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
