Job Summary

The Shipment Quality Officer is responsible for ensuring customer freight is loaded to the American Association of Railroads (AAR) standards. The position handles and reviews all customer Load Plan and Securement requests and is integral to both the safe operation of the railway and the reduction of freight claim costs.

Main Responsibilities

Damage Prevention and Claims Reduction Oversight
- Serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for various CN functions and customers related to damage prevention and load planning
- Proposes improvements to enhance CN’s shipment quality initiatives and reduce freight-claim costs
- Provide direct support to respective functions in various areas of shipment quality, lading recovery, load planning and claims reduction activities and initiatives
- Protect and salvages lading following derailments and negotiates freight salvage agreements
- Assess customer loading practices, provide AAR training to customers and negotiate claim settlements
- Investigate repetitive damage issues at major claimant’s facilities and develop an audit process to ensure customers are adhering to proper loading and securement standards
- Maintain information on compound operation compliance with AAR quality review standards
- Make recommendations for process improvements to maintain customer quality requirements
- Work with Freight Claims staff for data assembly and review
- Work with Automotive Marketing to ensure compliance with ISO 9000 processes
- Work with securement materials suppliers to forge a partnership geared towards solving customer damage issues
- Investigate instances of mishandling and high damage incidents for all commodities and assess whether load was prepared properly for shipment
- Work with various merchandise Shippers and Receivers on lading damage and claims issues based on data supplied for major customer issues
- Work with Shipment Quality, Freight Claims Group and other carriers on issues in which multiple territories and lines are involved
- Investigate improper loading incidents and provide recommendations with corrective actions as per CN tariffs

Load Plan Management
- Handle load plan creation and training to provide the best possibility of damage-free transport for all customers
- Liaises with customers to solve complex lading issues
- Provide customers with guidance for testing new load plans according to industry standards
- Work with customers and other railroads on special commodity loading best practices as part of the AAR Technical Advisory Group (TAG)

Training
- Provide training on load securement and lading to operations, and external customers
- Complete automotive compound audits to ensure yard compliance
- Provide CN contractors with guidance on best loading practices

Working Conditions

The role is performed in a combination of office and outdoor environments in various types of weather conditions with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. The incumbent must be able to walk for long distances outdoors and have the ability to climb ladders. The role requires mínimal travel (10%) within Canada and the United States (U.S.). Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure, and stress.

Experience

Railyard Claims and Damage Prevention
- Minimum 5 years of railroad claims and damage prevention experience

Education/Certification/Designation
- Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management

- Good understanding of railway operations
