Job Description Summary

The First Year Experience Coordinator is responsible for establishing successful academic, social, and psychological transitions of new students through managing, developing, and implementing all aspects of the First Year Experience programming in the Centre for Student Involvement & Careers. The incumbent will work within a team of First Year Coordinators who work in a collaborative partnership with students across the Faculties to contribute to a positive living and learning environment at the University of British Columbia.

The First Year Experience Coordinator develops and delivers programs and services to support a culture of learning, leadership, involvement, and service for students with particular focus on students in their first year at UBC Vancouver. The incumbent works closely with Faculty partners, and is responsible for managing, coordinating, and linking various faculty plans into a comprehensive orientation program for students. The incumbent will manage teams of student staff and will work in very close partnership with other staff and faculty, student organizations and student government (AMS/GSS), academic departments, and other Student Services departments to coordinate and deliver programming across the following portfolios: the First Year Experience, Student Learning, Leadership Development, and Student Involvement.

Organizational Status

The Coordinator position is a member of the Centre for Student Involvement & Careers staff team.

The Centre for Student Involvement & Careers is a hub that facilitates and enhances student learning through career building enriched educational experiences. Through orientation and peer mentoring, the Centre supports new students to become successful university learners, prepared to achieve their academic, personal, and career goals. It is a central point for all graduate and undergraduate students and employers on the UBC Vancouver campus to meet, connect, network and build relationships; as well as to research and explore career options. The Centre provides students access and connection to workplace learning, mentoring, volunteer and leadership opportunities; and offers career
- and employment-related services to students, academic departments, employers, and alumni.

The First Year Experience Coordinator will be expected to work in strong collaboration across the Centre for Student Involvement & Careers team, to both lead and support teams of student staff and volunteers, and to work independently to complete assigned duties. This position will also be expected to help build, articulate, and implement programming that reflects the deep connections between successful orientation/transition, leadership and involvement and positive career development for students.

Collaboration with campus partners is essential to ensure students are provided with the necessary support, resources and information pertinent to their UBC student experience. This position works closely, and in cooperation, with our colleagues in Student Housing and Hospitality Services (SHHS), Admissions, and Faculties to create joint program goals and ensure that programs serve the needs of students across their various points of connection with UBC.

Work Performed

The First Year Experience Coordinator will be responsible for managing the design, coordination, and delivery of programs and services in the areas of First Year Experience, Student Learning, Leadership Development and Student Involvement that support and enhance student engagement and learning. Responsibilities include:

- Manages existing relationships and develops new relationships with campus partners, stakeholders, and external community partners to inform the design of the First Year Experience program.
- Develops and implements methods to enhance the learning and meet the development needs of first year students. This includes developing and implementing programs and services.
