Special Olympics Alberta offers sports programs in more than 160 communities around the province, and since being founded in 1980, has grown from an organization with only a few dozen athletes, to one in which approximately 3,200 athletes compete in
18 official sports.
**The Opportunity**
In this role, you will play a valuable role in the development and support of young athletes and sports programs across the province. You will engage with other staff and volunteers to develop and support new sport programs across Special Olympics in Alberta.
Sport Coordinators must believe strongly in the Special Olympics mission, vision, and values. With support from their team, they will be expected to do whatever it takes to build or maintain strong, vibrant, and sustainable sport programs for our athletes. This may include:
- Coach Training & Certification
- Assist in providing support for all coaches to receive SafeSport training
- Support coaches with access to SOLearn and other online training platforms
- Manage data entry for the Locker
- Answering coach questions related to training and certifications
- Recruitment and relationship management with Learning Facilitators
- Assist in organizing NCCP training courses
- Booking Learning Facilitators
- Registration
- Coordination of required materials
- Communications related to training events
- Assist in ensuring that all coaches have required training and certifications as per current policies
Coach Conferences
- Assist in organizing annual coach conferences
- Facility bookings
- Logistics
- Registration
- Agenda planning
- Promotions and communications
- Assist in organizing Alberta coaches to attend other provinces coach conferences
Competitions
- Assist the Competitions Manager as needed to ensure quality community competitions
- Assist the Competitions Manager in GMS training, support and knowledge
- Assist the Competitions Manager with support for Provincial and National Games as needed
- Assist Community Coordinators in creation and on-going support to sport leagues
Sport Development
- Support the Community Coordinators, Manager of Program Partnerships, and community volunteers in development of new sports
- Provide resources, equipment, and support to communities starting new sports programs as needed
Young Athletes
- Organize and promote Youth Try-it days around Alberta
- Assist in development of new resources
Athlete Leadership
- Assist in arranging meetings with SOA Athlete Board Representative and Canadian Athlete Leadership Council Representative, providing opportunities to grow athlete leadership in Alberta
Healthy Athletes
- Organize provincial screening events
- Support recruitment and engagement opportunities for provincial clinical directors
- Support new and on-going research opportunities as require
Funding
Participate as a member of the SOA staff team in various initiatives:
- SOA Awards
- Annual Affiliate Conference
- Volunteer appreciation
- Staff retreat
- Local, Provincial or National fundraising opportunities
- On-going process and systems reviews and new initiatives (database, policies, resource development, websites, etc.)
Undertake other and additional duties as delegated and clearly defined by direct supervisor
**Qualifications**:
- Experience managing projects or people or a combination of both is an asset.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to make appropriate and timely decisions within authority.
- Experience working with individuals with a disability an asset.
- A solid grasp of the principles of the LTAD Model, Canadian Sport For Life movement and the dynamics and realities that face volunteer run sport programs
- Ability to manage priorities and balance deadline-driven workload.
- Strong organizational skills and detail oriented.
- Strong computer skills and advanced user of Microsoft suite including Teams.
- Confidence with change.
- This position will require you to work evenings and weekends, and there will be some travel throughout your assigned region and Alberta. A valid AB driver’s license and vehicle are required.
