Housing Focused Shelter Worker

We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Housing Focused Shelter Worker to join our team at The Mustard Seed. As a Housing Focused Shelter Worker, you will play a vital role in supporting participants accessing our drop-in and shelter program. Your primary responsibility will be to create a safe and respectful space while providing encouragement and assistance to our guests on their journey. You will utilize a person-centered approach to address participant needs, offer advocacy support, and connect them with internal and external resources. Crisis intervention, conflict resolution, and meaningful conversations will be daily occurrences in this role.

The Mustard Seed provides basic services such as food, clothing and housing, and support services including education and employment, to those living in poverty within Alberta and British Columbia.
**Position Type**: Permanent Part Time Position
**Schedule**: 8-hour shifts, 4 days on / 4 days off (4PM - Midnight)
**Reporting to**:Shelter Manager
**Location**:The Neighbour Centre, Edmonton, AB
- Serve as the first point of contact for participants seeking support, providing excellent service that promotes dignity, kindness, and equity for all.
- Maintain strict adherence to privacy and confidentiality standards outlined by FOIP and the Health Information Act.
- Model healthy relationships with community participants and volunteers through active listening, advising, appropriate referrals, and open-mindedness to spiritual conversations.
- Respond promptly to individuals in crisis, utilizing de-escalation skills and assisting them in exploring healthy alternatives.
- Assist with daily meal programs and ensure participants' basic needs are met.
- Create and maintain a safe and clean environment for adult participants in need of respite.
- Encourage participants to seek resources and services aligned with their goals through a person-centered approach.
- Actively participate in staff training, staff meetings, and one-on-one sessions with your supervisor.
- Be a supportive and proactive member of the team, collaborating with volunteers and other visitors.
- Demonstrate initiative and critical thinking in assessing situations and making appropriate decisions to support participants.
- Practice conflict resolution and facilitate reconciliatory conversations.
- Enforce participant suspensions when necessary, maintaining a professional and respectful environment.
- Collect and maintain accurate records, including incident reports.
- Respect proper boundaries with participants.
**REQUIREMENTS**
- 1 year of experience working with a marginalized population.
- Experience working within the culture of the inner city and/or with the less fortunate.
- Demonstrated passion for ending homelessness in Alberta.
- Ability to follow organizational protocols of front-line programs.
- Experience in case management and advocacy is considered an asset.
- Strong multi-tasking and organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize shifting priorities.
- Experience working in a volunteer-based organization is considered an asset.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with proficiency in conflict resolution.
- Customer service experience is an asset.
- Self-starter with the ability to work effectively in a cross-functional team.
- Desire to serve in a Christian Street ministry.
- Strong desire to work with a marginalized and vulnerable population.
**WORKING CONDITIONS**
- Ongoing compassionate care, frequent manual labor, conflict resolution, and organizational ability.
- Fast-paced environment requiring moderate mental effort to analyze information and problem-solve.
- Varied mental and emotional effort, with the ability to respond appropriately to intense situations and provide conflict resolution.
- Training and use of two-way radio communications and MS Office-based programs.
- Ability to lift up to 50lbs, with periods of standing, walking, and working both indoors and outdoors.
**ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS**

- Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.
- Vulnerable Sector Check and Employment Security Check is required.
