We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Housing Focused Shelter Worker to join our overnight team at The Mustard Seed. In this pivotal overnight role, you will play an essential part in supporting participants accessing our drop-in and shelter program during the night. Your primary responsibility will be to create a safe and respectful environment while providing encouragement and assistance to our guests on their journey, even in the late hours. Utilizing a person-centered approach, you will address participant needs, offer advocacy support, and connect them with internal and external resources, ensuring round-the-clock care. Your role will involve crisis intervention, conflict resolution, and meaningful conversations during the night, providing a steadfast presence for those in need during these crucial hours.

The Mustard Seed provides basic services such as food, clothing and housing, and support services including education and employment, to those living in poverty within Alberta and British Columbia.

**Position Type**: Permanent Part Time Position
**Schedule**: 8-hour shifts, 4 days on / 4 days off, 12AM - 8AM
**Reporting to**:Shelter Manager
**Location**: Edmonton, AB
- Serve as the first point of contact for participants seeking support, providing excellent service that promotes dignity, kindness, and equity for all.
- Maintain strict adherence to privacy and confidentiality standards outlined by FOIP and the Health Information Act.
- Model healthy relationships with community participants and volunteers through active listening, advising, appropriate referrals, and open-mindedness to spiritual conversations.
- Respond promptly to individuals in crisis, utilizing de-escalation skills and assisting them in exploring healthy alternatives.
- Assist with daily meal programs and ensure participants' basic needs are met.
- Create and maintain a safe and clean environment for adult participants in need of respite.
- Encourage participants to seek resources and services aligned with their goals through a person-centered approach.
- Actively participate in staff training, staff meetings, and one-on-one sessions with your supervisor.
- Be a supportive and proactive member of the team.
- Demonstrate initiative and critical thinking in assessing situations and making appropriate decisions to support participants.
- Practice conflict resolution and facilitate reconciliatory conversations.
- Enforce participant suspensions when necessary, maintaining a professional and respectful environment.
- Collect and maintain accurate records, including incident reports.
- Respect proper boundaries with participants.

**MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS**
- Minimum 1 year of experience working with a marginalized population.
- Experience working within the culture of the inner city and/or with the less fortunate.
- A strong passion for ending homelessness in Alberta.
- Ability to follow organizational protocols of front-line programs to completion.
- Experience in case management and advocacy is considered an asset.
- Strong organizational and multitasking skills with the ability to manage shifting priorities.
- Excellent communication (written and verbal) and conflict resolution skills.
- Self-starter with the ability to work effectively in a cross-functional team.
- A strong desire to work with a marginalized and vulnerable population.

**WORKING CONDITIONS**
- This position involves working in a challenging and potentially volatile environment where you may encounter racial slurs, name-calling, and derogatory comments from community members. It requires resilience, conflict resolution skills, and the ability to maintain professionalism and composure in the face of adversity. Training and support will be provided to ensure your safety and well-being.
- Moderate amounts of walking, climbing, standing, sitting, lifting, and carrying may be required.
- The position often involves a fast-paced environment and requires mental effort to analyze information and problem-solve.
- Varied mental and emotional effort, including responding appropriately to intense situations and providing conflict resolution.
- This position requires the training in usage of a two-way radio communications, MS Office based computer programming, HMIS database system, FDARP, FOIP, First Aid, NVCI, and Safe Talk.
