**PRIMARY PURPOSE**
The Automation Specialist, OPAL, is responsible for leading the development, management, and optimization of laboratory automation across the platform. This role is critical to the design, maintenance, and continuous improvement of automated workflows, ensuring that the platform operates with maximum efficiency and precision.
**NATURE OF WORK**
Reporting to the Platform Lead, OPAL, the Automation Specialist is responsible for the development, optimization, modification, and troubleshooting of automated protocols and maintenance of laboratory automation equipment. The Automation Specialist has a deep understanding of DNA sequencing library preparation techniques and provides training and support to their colleagues in automated techniques while also contributing to the execution of both automated and manual workflows. Occasionally there may be a requirement to work outside of standard hours.
As part of the GIFS team, your work is closely interconnected with other programs and platforms within GIFS. While day-to-day priorities are often coordinated with the Laboratory Technician III, OPAL, the Automation Specialist is expected to operate with a high level of independence. Given the critical nature of the work, a high degree of judgment is required in daily technical decision-making. Errors can have significant consequences, including reputational damage, financial losses, or wasted resources.
Your success requires you understand the interconnectedness of GIFS and the impact that changes and operations have on all the platforms, programs, customers, and the reputation of GIFS. Key characteristics of the role include a strong commitment to safety, support of change management, and team leadership through exemplification of GIFS values. Other characteristics include well-developed organizational and project management skills, the ability to establish and maintain relationships as well as a proactive approach to problem solving. **ACCOUNTABILITIES**
- **Lead by Example**: Demonstrate leadership by ensuring high standards in the execution of automated workflows and adherence to best practices in safety and efficiency.
- **Script Development and Validation**: Develop and validate new scripts for laboratory automation equipment with a high degree of independence. This includes the creation of custom methods for liquid handling systems and other automation tools.
- **Maintain and Optimize Automated Systems**: Continuously improve existing automation protocols, ensuring they operate at peak efficiency and adapt to evolving project needs. This includes the regular calibration and monitoring of all automated systems to maintain accuracy and reliability.
- **Manual Method Contribution**: Collaborate with the technical team to develop manual methods that complement automated workflows, ensuring flexibility and robustness in laboratory operations.
- **Calibration and Maintenance**: Ensure that all laboratory automation equipment is regularly calibrated and fully operational. Take a proactive approach to equipment maintenance to minimize downtime and ensure consistent results.
- **SOP Development for Automated Procedures**: Draft and maintain SOPs specific to automated protocols, ensuring clarity and ease of use for all team members involved in executing automated workflows.
- **Training and Support**: Train technical staff in the execution of automated protocols, ensuring they are fully competent in the use of automation equipment and understand how to troubleshoot basic issues.
- **Troubleshooting**: Act as the primary point of contact for resolving complex errors with automation equipment. Collaborate with equipment manufacturers when necessary to diagnose and solve hardware or software issues.
- **Execute Workflows**: Play an active role in executing both automated and manual laboratory workflows. Provide direct support in the development and troubleshooting of manual workflows to ensure alignment with overall lab objectives.
- **Process Improvement**: Collaborate with the Platform Lead and other team members to improve laboratory processes and workflows, ensuring continuous improvement and increased operational efficiency.
