We are looking for a Technical Officer in Extractive Metallurgy to join the Mineral Processing team to support the Energy, Mining and Environment Research Centre. This person would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.

The Extractive Metallurgical Technologist’s primary duty is to independently execute hydrometallurgical test work in the areas of selective leaching and precipitation, solvent extraction, ionic exchange, and solid-liquid separation at bench and pilot scale.

You will be working in a team environment with researchers and technical experts in world-class facilities. You will provide technical support services in the design, planning, conduct and analysis of complex experiments, test and facilities operation. You will be participating in experiments/test preparation and laboratory and equipment management, and project management related activities.

Your principal responsibilities will include the following:

- Lead test setup, execution, sampling, tear down, data collection, and initial data organizing.
- Maintaining laboratory and pilot scale equipment.
- Conduct sample preparation and elemental analysis such as XRF, ICP, etc.
- Train and mentor junior technical officers and students.

**Screening Criteria**:
**Education**:
A College diploma or University degree in Mechanical Engineering technology or an equivalent combination of experience and education.

**Experience**:

- Significant* experience in designing, conducting, documenting and analyzing complex domain-specific experiments and tests related to mineral processing and extractive metallurgy;
- Significant* experience with the safe operation, maintenance, verification, repair and installation of equipment such as complex laboratory apparatus, mechanical or electrical machinery, hand power tools and/or material handling equipment;
- Experience in analytical chemistry with hands-on experience in sample preparation techniques for advanced analytical equipment (XRF, XRD, ICP, etc.) and materials characterization tests related to mineral processing and extractive metallurgy;
- Ability to understand and use specialized domain-specific software as well as general office products;
- Basic knowledge of IP protection and management;
- Knowledge of technical and scientific literature sources, search engines and computer software relevant to the work.

**Note**: *Significant experience is defined by a minimum of 3 years of experience.

- You must be able and willing to work in an ordinary laboratory environment with some exposure to hazardous situations; you must be able to work in a physical environment requiring manual dexterity, repeated hand movements, handling bulky objects and must be able to stand or sit for long periods of time.

- Significant knowledge of hydrometallurgy, chemistry principles, chemical engineering applied to mineral processing and extractive metallurgy; demonstrated through the ability to conduct routine mineral processing and hydrometallurgical tests;
- Basic knowledge of materials characterization applied to mineral processing and extractive metallurgy (XRF, XRD, ICP, SEM, etc.);
- Basic computer knowledge including, Microsoft Excel, and networking;
- Ability to comprehend, follow procedures and accurately take directions in a wet chemistry laboratory setting;
- Proficiency in technical communication and reporting on experimental observations and data; and
- Knowledge of Occupational Health & Safety regulations and legislation required to create and maintain a safe and healthy environment.
