For over 35 years, the Discovery Centre has developed a reputation for being Nova Scotia’s leader in the delivery of exciting hands-on, minds-on science programming for youth.
As a Science Communication Specialist (Climate), you will be responsible for the development and delivery of youth Climate Action programming, including writing engaging summaries of new research for youth and educator audiences.
The specialist is responsible for reviewing peer reviewed publications, translating the materials into plain language for youth and educators, and developing hands-on activities related to the research. The material covered will be Canadian in nature and relate to a variety of climate change and climate action topics. The role may also support online inquiry-based education, communicating concepts virtually or via video recordings. Additionally, the specialist is responsible for delivering a positive visitor experience through visitor interactions.
This project will give the intern the experience of working within a team setting, researching, and developing materials that can easily be presented to educators for both elementary and high school audiences. The intern will benefit from the opportunity to improve upon their organizational skills, research, climate change knowledge, presenting science, knowledge of educational practices, and working in a collaborative environment both virtually and in person. The intern will be part of a network of peers from across Canada who will be supporting the delivery of the program.
**Description of Tasks**:
The Science Communication Specialist (Climate) works in the Science Education department and reports to the Project Manager, Youth Climate Action. The primary tasks of the position are:
- Reviewing peer-reviewed publications and translating the materials into plain language for youth and educators
- Developing hands-on activities and programs related to research on climate change
- Delivering youth outreach programs related to climate change and climate action
- Review and respond to feedback from peers, researchers, science centre contacts and schools
- Collaborate and interact with staff, volunteers, science centres, community organizations, researchers, and the public in a friendly and professional manner
- Engaging with visitors in the Centre and delivering climate-related programming
**Qualifications**:
Education: Post-secondary degree in environmental science, education, science communication, or science journalism/writing
Experience: Experience summarizing complex information; experience preparing and presenting workshops considered an asset; experience working in a virtual environment preferred

Eligibility: Applicants must be register for the Young Canada Works internship program and be approved to participate in the program.
**Measurable Outcomes**:
The Science Communication Specialist (Climate) will:
- Successfully develop and deliver, when applicable, climate change and climate action hands-on programs and activities for schools
- Provide a safe and positive experience for virtual and in person school activities
- Complete quarterly reports on progress of the program and an end-of-project report on activities and make recommendations for future of climate change programs
- Review existing and contribute to creating new research features depending on demand from the ongoing climate action project
