**Working for the Department of Pediatrics, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry**

The Department of Pediatrics at the University of Alberta is one of Canada's leading academic health centres for pediatric specialty and subspecialty education and research. We also work in conjunction with the Stollery Children's Hospital to provide leading edge clinical care. Members of the department are dedicated to improving child health.

**Position Summary**

This is a lab/research coordinator position including supervision of projects for summer students, undergraduate trainees, and new graduate students. Duties include responsibility for all lab safety issues and compliance with lab safety as defined by Environmental Health and Safety. This position is also responsible for the shipment of dangerous goods and maintains certification for shipping of human samples, as well as all lab purchases including selection of major pieces of equipment and negotiations with vendors for reduced pricing.

**Duties**
- Research (70%)
- Day-to-day operation of the research lab
- Design of experiments and selection of relevant controls, and standards
- Analysis and validation of research data
- Testing and calibration of all analytical equipment
- Procurement of external controls for experiment validation
- Analysis of scientific data
- Troubleshooting erroneous data
- Instruction of outside personnel in the use of complex lab equipment
- Ensuring all staff is working in a safe and correct manner
- Purchasing and maintenance of lab supplies or equipment (20%)
- Purchasing of all lab consumables for the research group
- Selection of major equipment items for purchase
- Negotiation with vendors for price reductions on bulk purchases and equipment purchases. Maintenance and repair of lab equipment that is not under service contract
- Testing and calibration of equipment
- Teaching (10%)
- Instruction of summer students, undergraduate trainees, and new graduate students in all aspects of lab safety including WHMIS
- Hands-on instruction of trainees in proper scientific technique and use of equipment
- Preparation of SOPs for all tasks undertaken by trainees

**Minimum Qualifications**
- Postgraduate degree in molecular biology and cell biology, or a combination of a Bachelor’s degree in a related field and equivalent experience in the field
- Proven experience and understanding of Molecular and Cell biology techniques
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact with members of the lab and those in other support areas
- Demonstrated ability to work well in a team environment, manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously, and prioritize work effectively to meet deadlines
- Strong attention to detail and analytical skills to ensure accurate and consistent work according to established protocols, as well as the ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues that arise during experiments
