In this position you will specialize in microbiology and pathology related to fish diseases, as well as quality and safety management requirements for the Fish Health Lab and taking steps to achieve and maintain accreditation/certification and compliance. You will perform a variety of routine and specialized lab procedures to detect and identify bacterial isolates, viruses and parasites of fish origin associated with fish and/or human diseases. Additionally, you will ensure that specimens are received, documented and processed according to set procedure.

You will conduct testing for certification (or certification-like testing) of fish in facilities, in compliance with federal and provincial standards for the exclusion of and identification and confirmation of specific disease agents of regional or national concern. You will work with co-workers and other relevant stakeholders to establish and maintain a lab quality management system consistent with ISO certification standards and lead the work to achieving ISO 17025 certification.

You will be part of a collaborative lab team that provides direct technical support to various stakeholders including departmental fish biologists, specialists in fish culture and fisheries management teams.

**Qualifications**:
**Requirements**:

- Two-year technical diploma in laboratory or biological sciences or related field of study
- Four years related experience such as veterinary pathology, biosafety standards, lab quality management systems and diagnostics
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license or equivalent

**Equivalency**:Directly related education or experience on the basis of:

- 1 year of education for 1 year of experience OR;
- 1 year of experience for 1 year of education

**Assets**:

- Knowledge of Quality Assurance (Q.A) and Quality Control (Q.C) required to coordinate the lab quality management system and lead the certification process.
- Knowledge of the principles and experience in laboratory health, safety and biosecurity.
- Significant experience in a diagnostic microbiological lab environment preferably supplemented in pathology and fish pathogens (bacterial, viral and parasitic) with awareness and understanding of the importance of aseptic technique.
- Ability to assist in post-mortem examination of fish, selection and collection of tissue relevant samples in the lab and in the field
- Supervisory skills and abilities including participating in hiring and training of contract staff.

**Salary**:
$2,476.19 to $3,261.33 biweekly ($64,628 - $85,120/year)

**Notes**:
**Hours of Work**: 36.25 hours of work per week, Monday to Friday.

**Please note**: This is a full time permanent position located in Edmonton. Occasional travel will be required to Vegreville.
