Government Relations Specialist

Overview:
Clean Energy BC (CEBC) is searching for a Government Relations Specialist who is enthusiastic about the renewable energy industry and passionate about reconciliation. Based in Vancouver, CEBC is a clean energy industry association with over 130 members. Our membership is comprised of clean energy industry leaders/professionals, First Nations clean energy leaders and academics. CEBC maintains alliances and trusts with key government ministries, BC Hydro, the British Columbia Utilities Commission, members and First Nations clean energy leaders. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Government Relations Specialist will develop and execute the government relations plan. More specifically, they will analyze energy-related, provincial and federal legislation, regulations, policies and legislative proposals, issue internal briefings, presentations, and recommendations, and develop position and response letters. A core objective of this role is to help CEBC navigate through the complexity of clean energy policies and advocate for the continuous and long-term growth of the industry.
Key Function Tasks:
- Develop and execute CEBC’s Government Relations Plan
- Liaise with the key government ministries and arrange meetings
- Liaise with CEBC members, working groups, and partner organizations on policy issues
pertaining to the clean energy industry
- Monitors and provides insightful recommendations to determine policy implications of key bills, and recommends positions to the Executive Director
- Reads, analyzes and interprets legislative proposals, provincial laws and other policy issues
- Drafts a well-articulated position and response letters
- Supports organization-wide planning, development, and communication activities, and
ensures alignment with CBC's Communications Plan
- Works with other organizations to gain support on issues important to CEBC
- Attend various events including CEBC’s own conferences and workshops
- Other duties as assigned, dependent on organizational needs and employee skills
Key Administrative Tasks:
- Communicate factual information
- Maintain clear records of the tasks, activities, and details of your work
- Contribute ideas, energy and personal commitment to help foster a positive and rewarding work environment at CEBC
- Attend meetings as requested
- Some overnight travel may be required
Key Areas of Accountability:
- Adhere to all CEBC policies and procedures, including safety
- Passionate about working with Clean Energy Industry stakeholders including First Nations
- Have a genuine interest and passion for working in clean energy and its related policy
- Passionate about expanding the network
- Bring a good sense of humour
- Must maintain a valid BC driver's license
- Legally able to work in Canada
Skills & Abilities:
- Demonstrated success in delivering high-quality work products on a consistent, reliable basis in a fast-paced work environment with ambitious goals
- Excellent interpersonal, written, analytical and verbal communication skills are a must
- Demonstrated public speaking experience and skills are a must
- Ability to work independently and with mínimal supervision
- Ability to work well with a team, report regularly and meet key deliverables
- Knowledge of the organization, functions, process and procedures of the British Columbia Legislature required
- Familiarity with current provincial issues in policy areas related to the clean energy industry
- Must have an intuitive ability to recognize and appropriately convey the sensitive nature of any situation and the ability to keep matters appropriately confidential
- Excellent organizational skills with strong attention to detail are required
- Ability to work under pressure and tight deadlines
- Prepare/present PowerPoint presentations
- Project management with the ability to multitask and meet deadlines while juggling
competing priorities
- Flexibility to adjust and contribute to continually evolving work situations and changing
priorities
- Must be able to travel locally and attend multi-day conference
**Education**:
- Bachelor’s degree required; graduate degree in public policy or law preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential job duties may be considered.
**Experience**:
- 5+ years of Government Relations and/or advocacy experience required
