Academic Governance Specialist

The Alma Mater Society (AMS) at the University of British Columbia (UBC) is seeking a highly motivated Academic Governance Specialist to join its team. This exciting opportunity involves working closely with the Vice-President, Academic and University Affairs, to advance student representation and academic policy initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in carrying out political and administrative duties for the VP, Academic and University Affairs, as well as other directives from AMS Council.
- Develop and research policy, position, and briefing papers on key academic issues, including tuition consultation, campus planning, academic accommodations, student access and equity, and more.
- Sit on academic-related committees and working groups, representing the interests of students at UBC.
- Provide regular updates to the VP, Academic and University Affairs on important academic issues within the portfolio.
- Liaise with Student Senate Caucus and the VP Academic Caucus on designated issues, fostering strong relationships within the university community.
- Contribute to long-term projects within the portfolio, such as the roll-out of the Academic Experience Survey and planning of the OER Championships Gala.
- Collaborate with AVP University Affairs and VP, Academic and University Affairs Office Commissioners to achieve the goals and objectives of the portfolio.
- Represent the VP, Academic and University Affairs at meetings as necessary.
Requirements:
- Past experience in policy development, research, and/or planning is an asset.
- Current or past student member of the UBC Vancouver Senate is an asset.
- Strong writing and research skills are required.
- Strong public speaking skills are an asset.
- Interest in pursuing AMS academic initiatives and lobbying priorities is required.
- Ability to work independently and take initiative on projects is essential.
