The Agency currently has a full-time Cultural Wellness Lead position available on the Two Row Understanding Service Team.

This role leads the development of a respectful, wholistic, and collaborative service approach to children, youth and families who identify with First Nations, Metis, or Inuit (FNIM) heritage with the goals of responding to:

- The Truth and Reconciliation Child Welfare Calls to Action
- An Act Respecting First Nations Inuit and Metis Children Youth and Families
- Calls for justice from the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls Inquiry
- Supporting the Agency’s Strategic Direction, “Collaboration with Aboriginal families and communities”
- Safe with Interventions Report
- Royal Commission of Aboriginal People

Major Position Responsibilities:

- Collaborates with FNIM community partners and Nations to enhance positive working relationships between the agency, other organizations, and the community in general, to promote the well-being of FNIM children/youth.
- Collaborates with the FNIM community and supports FCW staff to provide traditional teachings and cultural counselling to caregivers on matters related to childcare and development, family life, relationships, intergenerational healing and all other matters impacting their life circumstances.
- Collaborates with and brings together community partners to support the cultural wellbeing of families, creating services that bridge the gap between FACS and the community to ensure healing services are available to FNIM families.
- Supports direct service staff and supervisors in understanding how to implement a wholistic and prevention focused practice, especially for high-risk families to minimize risk, reduce apprehensions and improve child development.
- In collaboration with the Service Director, Truth and Reconciliation oversees the development and adaptation of culturally appropriate tools, and the development of resources that encompass the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of the children and families we serve.
- Oversees the collection and maintenance of a community resource list for FNIM families for purposes of referrals to culturally appropriate community resources and organizations.
- Represents Family and Children Services of Waterloo Region at community level.
- Consults Elders, community leaders, Nations and other community members regarding community values and customs in relation to the development of wholistic service delivery.
- Supports staff, supervisors, and leadership in providing educational coaching, resources, reunification mandate (priority of placement) information to foster parents/legal custody applicants interested in caring for FNMI children.
- Through various forms of staff education, helps facilitate teachings and discussions about cultural continuity for FNIM children/youth who do not reside with their biological parents.
- Coordinates the implementation of access to healers, works with community partners to bridge gaps to healing services.
- Supports the development and facilitation of educational workshops for direct service staff to increase their understanding of the intergenerational impacts of colonization and residential schools, intergenerational healing, and invites community partners to provide educational workshops, information sharing.
- Supports direct service staff and supervisors through circle process and one to one support to ensure cultural services are provided for staffs own holistic wellbeing.
- Supports the development of a framework for wholistic file disclosure for sixties scoop and millennial scoop survivors.

Knowledge & Skills Required:

- Lived experience of the issues facing Indigenous people of Canada and self-identification as FNIM required.
- Demonstrated cultural attachment to one’s own Indigenous experience.
- BSW; or Community College diploma in the human services field; or relevant undergraduate degree or equivalent is preferred.
- Minimum five (5) years’ experience in working directly with First Nations, Inuit and Metis families.
- Alternatively, an equivalent combination of education and experience working with Indigenous peoples.
- A high level of cultural literacy and competence in the provision of culture-based services.
- Ability to provide cultural ceremonies and teachings.
- Ability to speak Anishinaabemowin and/or Ogwehoweh languages will be considered an asset.
- An understanding of the issues impacting at-risk Indigenous families within the urban environment.
- Knowledge of Traditional Life Stages (Child Development) and developmental screening tools.
- Solid understanding of Truth and Reconciliation Child Welfare Calls to Action, An Act Respecting First Nations Inuit and Metis Children Youth and Families and the calls for justice from the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls Inquiry.
