**Position Overview**:
The Academic English stream prepares students for academic studies in English-medium institutions, either in High School, University or College. This program focuses on developing the skills that students require to be successful in an academic environment.

Students will practice the advanced-level skills that they will need to be successful in an undergraduate academic setting. In reading, students will read high-level texts, many of them taken from a variety of disciplines. Students will gain strategies for understanding and retaining information in textbook material. They will also practice critical thinking, including identifying bias, generalizations, and misuse of statistics. Plagiarism will be addressed extensively, and students will complete exercises that will help them distinguish between the legitimate versus plagiarized use of source material. Students will take and support an opinion using material from source texts in writing critiques, essays, and a research paper.

**Responsibilities**:

**Education and Qualifications**:

- Undergraduate degree required
- TESL or CELTA required
- Master’s Degree in Education or Communications considered an asset
- Experience teaching an undergraduate writing course or courses considered an asset
- Minimum of 800 hours of experience in the following:

- teaching APA and university-level reference work
- teaching the methodology of writing a research paper, which students write finding their own sources
- teaching advanced critical thinking skills
- teaching the Academic Word List
- Minimum of 1600 hours of experience in the following:

- teaching advanced reading strategies
- Experience providing meaningful feedback and error correction on a variety of assignments, including five-paragraph essays, research papers, annotated bibliographies, academic summaries and critiques
- Experience teaching or familiarity with writing portfolio and peer review
- Experience preparing students for further post-secondary studies
- Extensive experience in requirements of first
- and second-year university course requirements
- Extensive knowledge of supplemental sources to recommend to students struggling with grammar and vocabulary competencies
- Experience incorporating technology in teaching
- Experience teaching English as an additional or foreign language to adults
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal, negotiating, and conflict-resolution skills to deal effectively with a wide variety of situations
- Demonstrated sensitivity to the needs and issues of a diverse student body
- Strong computer skills, including use of Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with online tools and resources for teaching
- Varied teaching experience is considered an asset (in terms of skill, level, demographic, and location)
- Knowledge of a language additional to English considered an asset
