**POSITION: CANADIAN COAST GUARD (CCG) COORDINATOR**
**HOUR OF WORK: FULL-TIME, PERMANENT (35 HRS/WEEK)**
**REPORTS TO: FISHERIES MANAGER**
**WAGE: $30/hour**
***:The Fisheries Department is responsible for the stewardship of the Tsawout First Nation's (TFN) water resources and their habitat. The Department provides vital services for TFN including a productive and sustainable fishery, safe sources of seafood, the protection and conservation of resources, and healthy ecosystems. The Department is key to the scientific understanding and management of not only the TFN’s fisheries, but also its waterways in general.
**PURPOSE OF THE POSITION**:The Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) Coordinator oversees and carries out program development and activities through the Canadian Coast Guard Contribution Agreement (Agreement) as well as other activities to support TFN Fisheries.**:
**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Assists in the development of a multi-year community Marine Safety Equipment Training plan/program and with the annual Fisheries Marine Use Plan; coordinates and initiates the Marine Safety Equipment training for Tsawout members; coordinates spills response training with the Coast Guard;
- Participates in existing Tier 1 (FN to FN) and Tier 2(FN to level of GOV) and Tier 3 (FN to level of Gov and stakeholders) forums as required including Coast Guard safety and response planning;
- Works under the Agreement and in accordance with the expected results, and supporting detailed operational work plans jointly developed by TFN and the Canadian Coast Guard;
- Participates in on-the-water activities including spill response, marine science research and monitoring of items such as shellfish, kelp, plankton, wave buoys;
- Prepares regular progress/update reports to the to Fisheries Manager as required.; prepares and submits regular activity and narrative reports and statistics to appropriate agencies and the community;
- Prepares funding proposals; and ensures reports required by any funding or partner agencies are completed and forwarded as per agreed to format, timelines and contract requirements;
- Interacts with Nation employees, members, committees and working groups, other First Nation communities, the public, government agencies, other partners and special interest groups;
- Coordinates cultural and traditional community activities including food, social and ceremonial delivery;
- Coordinates and executes food fisheries activities including scheduling, harvesting, process and delivery of product to the community;
- Plans, coordinates and assists in facilitating meetings, and or participate in meetings as required;
- Participates in rehabilitation restoration of all waterways within the TFN traditional area;
- Participates in estuary planning enhancement activities including hatcher husbandry work in watershed, rivers and creeks;
- Works from, operates and maintains various types of boats, motors, aquatic equipment, and navigation aids and software such as Tide and Current Tables, GIS, GPS, sonar, radar and navigation software and ensures that all TFN Fisheries vessels are equipped with functioning safety equipment;
- Spends a significant amount time working in the field under strenuous conditions during all weather conditions;
- Ensures department equipment is properly used and maintained as per the maintenance and repairs schedule and WorkSafe BC standards;
- Maintains daily activities, catch report and vessel activity log books;
- Ensures boat crews are aware of and drilled in safety evacuation procedures and with all the safety equipment on all TFN Fisheries vessels;
**EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE**
- Grade 12 graduation (Dogwood or BC Adult Graduation Diploma);
- Degree or diploma in a discipline such as Aquaculture, or Fisheries Resource Management, an asset;
- Experience working with a First Nation organization; and
- 5 years of current experience in the fishing or fisheries industry; or
- An equivalent combination of related education, training and experience;
- Experience liaising with various regulatory agencies an asset;
- Experience developing a variety of written reports, presentations and other documentation an asset;
- Experience operating power boats up to 15 tons or 12 meters an asset;
- Must possess or undergo training for the following certificates: Small Vessel Operator Proficiency; Restricted Radio Telephone Operator/VHF; Medical Emergency, Swift Water, and Marine First Aid certificates.
**KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES**
- Strong interpersonal skills - must have the ability to work effectively with administration, staff, leadership, developers and community members.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills including a strong ability in report and proposal writing.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Knowledge of and experience using Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Access & Excel) and proficient data management skills.
