The Alberta Emergency Management Agency (AEMA), under the authority of the Emergency Management Act, leads the coordination and co-operation of all organizations involved in emergencies and disasters. This includes emergency and disaster prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery.

The Alberta Emergency Management Agency (AEMA) is accountable and responsible to the GoA, to Albertans, to their communities, and to industry for the protection of people, their property, and the environment from the effects of emergency events. Alberta relies on a decentralized “system” for managing the various types of emergency events that occur every year. The AEMA accomplishes its objectives by leading the co-ordination, collaboration and co-operation between all entities involved in prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery activities within this diverse system.

**Role Responsibilities**:
Reporting to the Manager, Strategic Partnerships and Public Education, the Risk Reduction Public Education Specialist plays a key role in creation of public education materials, communications and multimedia content to contribute to the unit's goal of increasing individual and community resilience and contributing to disaster risk reduction behaviour in Alberta. This position works closely with a number of internal partners, including Communications and Public Engagement (CPE) staff, Public Service Commission (PSC) staff and other ministry partners to create innovative programming, tools and resources to increase risk literacy for GoA staff and the public and inspire preparedness action.

The Risk Reduction Public Education Specialist works with team members in the creation and successful production of online events, e-learning content and facilitated engagement and learning sessions. This involves contributing to the creation of preparedness programming and public education materials built for a variety of stakeholders with varying needs and access to resources. This position also plays a key role in providing performance reporting and analytics for communications tactics, website traffic and social media content generated through personal preparedness program initiatives.

During activations of the Provincial Emergency Coordinations Centre (PECC), the Risk Reduction Public Education Specialist will support in the most appropriate position that fits their skills and abilities as defined in the Incident Command System (ICS) and the needs of the current incident, during exercises and when the PECC elevates its operational level to 2, 3 or 4.

This requires strong stakeholder relations and communication skills with a varied group of partners, many of which will be new to the field of emergency management.
- **Drive for Results** - Responsible for development of the annual risk reduction communications plan, which is informed by research and analysis of previous strategies, developed in partnership with the team and works towards measurable outcomes which build on past experiences.

**Qualifications**:
Education and Experience:
University graduation in Arts, Communications, Public Administration, or in a related field plus 2 years progressively responsible related experience; or equivalent as described below.

Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

- 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
- 1 year of experience for 1 year of education

**Requirements**:

- Knowledge of communications and social media tools and best practices.
- Knowledge of community and stakeholder relations.
- Knowledge of development of public education programming.
- Strong analytical skill with very high attention to detail and organization.
- Thorough understanding of how to communicate effectively
