**NEW FACILITY OPENING SEPTEMBER 2023**

Beacon is hiring for a brand-new purpose-built low barrier supportive housing facility for youth participants aged 19-27. The Meares building will provide wraparound 24/7 support for 48 participants who are precariously housed or experiencing homelessness.

The goal of Meares is to use a collaborative, strength-based perspective that recognizes the individual skills, talents, and needs of our residents. In collaboration with community resources, Meares will provide life and living skills, two meals a day and a safe and welcoming environment to help give youth a stable home.

We are seeking passionate, community minded individuals to join our team and set the foundation for youth to enter self-sustainable, independent housing when it is their time to exit the program.

Reporting to the Manager of Meares St, the Meares Indigenous Case Worker plays a vital part of the team, providing individualized, person-centered support to Indigenous participants staying at Meares. They will support Indigenous participants to schedule and attend appointments, keep their suites clean, and access other resources. The Indigenous Case worker supports the development of daily life and living skills by working closely with Indigenous participants. **PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Provides individualized, person-centered support to Indigenous tenants, including:

- Prepare, document, implement, monitor and evaluate support plans with each Indigenous participant’s integrated community teams
- Identify potential problems; troubleshoot with Indigenous participants and report any difficulties to Meares Housing Support Staff and community integrated teams
- Inform management, housing workers and other professionals regarding Indigenous participant needs and support
- Monitor Indigenous participant’s mental health and substance use and determining when to provide additional support
- Recognize, analyze and respond to potential emergency situations in and around building
- Encourage and facilitate participation in decision-making regarding housing, programming and supports
- Create and maintain professional relationships with Indigenous participants, community, and all stakeholders
- Liaise and actively plan with community resources including; Beacon HPSS Programs, Foundry workers, YICMT, Umbrella HOPPS, health and health care practitioners, police and emergency services
- Be familiar with, build and maintain positive relationships with appropriate community resources
- Plan for and provide 1 on 1 support, advocacy, and resources to Indigenous participants in the building
- Maintain case notes and reports
- Participate in the reporting process by tracking Track statistics and outcomes of individuals and the program for the manager.
- Support Indigenous participants in attending appointments, including medical, psychiatric, counseling, etc to encourage and build life skills
- Coordinate referrals to essential services and programs for youth
- Perform other relevant job duties as required

**QUALIFICATIONS**:

- Minimum 3 years’ experience working with homelessness and marginalized groups of individuals in a direct support role
- Minimum 1 year experience with case management and individualized care
- Familiarity with Indigenous cultural practices and communities
- Understanding of issues related to mental health needs and addictions
- Experience working with individuals who have multiple barriers
- Familiarity with mental health and substance use services in the Greater Victoria area.
- Level 1 Occupational First Aid
- Food Safe
- Naloxone training
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license preferred
- Comfortable working in a pet friendly environment.

**KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES**:

- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Extensive knowledge of local Indigenous organizations and resources
- Ability to problem solve and work independently as well as part of a team.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Demonstrated knowledge of the impacts of addiction, mental health, homelessness and poverty
- Ability to use sound judgement and maintain a positive, professional attitude while working in demanding conditions and circumstances
- Strong knowledge of trauma informed care
- Ability to kneel to ground to attend to overdoses and other medical emergencies.
- Physical ability to lift 30lbs, walk up and down stairs and be on feet for substantial time during shifts.
