**Position Description**:
Our Department of Paediatric Laboratory Medicine (DPLM) is currently seeking a Transfusion Safety Officer to provide comprehensive technical and clinical expertise relating to all aspects of allogeneic and if required autologous transfusion. For issues regarding transfusion medicine and blood safety, the Transfusion Safety Officer, contributes to the quality of patient care by working collaboratively with physicians, surgeons, nursing and laboratory staff, regarding technical, clinical and safety matters relating to transfusion, to ensure appropriate utilization of blood products. Acting in accordance with the mission, vision, values and goals of the Department of Paediatric Laboratory Medicine and those of the Hospital, the Transfusion Safety Officer provides education and consultation; participates in risk management for transfusion as a whole, being a key member of the Transfusion Advisory Group (TAG); and monitors utilization of allogeneic blood products by conducting relevant audits; and liaises with Canadian Blood Services and other partners.
**Here's What You'll Get to Do**:
- Technical, Clinical & Patient Consultation_
- Works collaboratively with Medical Director, Manager, Supervisor, Transfusion Medicine laboratory staff and others to ensure relevant policies, processes and procedures reflect current regulatory requirements and transfusion practices.
- Works with the Blood Management Coordinator and others to develop, implement and promote the principles of and strategies for blood conservation throughout the Hospital.
- Promotes benchmarking and evidence based practice, recommending change to practice as appropriate.
- Reviews, recommends and/or introduces blood transfusion equipment devices to the appropriate hospital personnel.
- Acts as resource for blood transfusion related technical problems.
- Utilization Management_
- Performs regular audits both retrospective and prospective regarding utilization of blood, blood products and alternatives.
- Develops and monitors a blood product utilization program and brings relevant issues to the attention of the Medical Director and TAG.
- Participates in Hospital groups and professional organizations internal and external as appropriate.
- Communicates with fellow Transfusion Safety Officers regarding current activities and or issues of interest.
- Education and research_
- Teaching of clinicians (nurses, residents, trainees, transport staff) as well as laboratory staff on appropriate aspects of transfusion practice.
- Supporting transfusion research, data collection, as directed by the Medical Director.
- Presentation in provincial and national conferences regarding transfusion practice.
- Participation in interhospital committees on transfusion practice and transfusion education.
Performs other duties consistent with the job classification, as required.
**Here’s What You’ll Need**:
- Bachelor of Science and/or diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology.
- BSc MLS and/or Advanced Registered Technologist (Transfusion Medicine) is preferred OR Baccalaureate in Sciences/Health Sciences (Registered Nurse).
- Member in good standing with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO) OR the College of Nurses of Ontario as applicable.
- Five years of experience as an MLT in Transfusion Medicine with advanced knowledge and technical expertise; demonstrated leadership ability; demonstrated expertise and experiences in lab area; OR an RN with minimum of five years related clinical experience OR transfusion experience.
- Paediatric experience an asset.
- Demonstrates in-depth knowledge and understanding of transfusion medicine.
- Practices and promotes the principles of quality management and the efficient utilization of resources
- Demonstrates good oral and written communication skills and possesses an understanding of adult learning modalities.
