Port Alberni, Canada The Salvation Army Full time

**HOURS**:
This position is full-time (up to 40 hours per week with averaging agreement).

**KEY RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Plans weekly/monthly meal menu for all Shelter clients and Staff. Meals include: Breakfast, lunch and dinner for up to 100 residents and guests per serving
- Overseas the preparation and service of all meals and snacks for clients and including partner agencies and programs as directed; including special dietary needs of the residents and guests as required.
- Manages food and supply inventory; ensures the best use of resources, including donations to minimize waste. Monitors food purchases to ensure budgetary constraints are observed. Fosters good relationships with food donors, and other community partners. Provides input to Community Ministries Director/Shelter Manager and for budget preparations
- Ensures staff safety in compliance with Health and Safety standards.
- Follows guidelines for the safety and security of food and equipment and monitors practices to ensure adherence. Participates in Occupational Health and Safety committees.
- Informs the Community Ministries Director/Shelter Manager of any maintenance work and repair of kitchen equipment that needs to be done.
- Provides direct supervisory duties for up to 30 volunteers/staff weekly. Collaborates with Shelter Manager/Supervisor for orientation and training. Provides direct supervision to relief cooks for the Shelter.
- Coordinates the ordering of food supplies in collaboration with Community Ministries Director/Shelter Manager; ensures the complete inventory supply on a weekly basis.
- Coordinate with local dietician annually, or as required, to ensure the nutritional value of meals related to effective menu planning. Overseas and ensures the preparation of documents and record keeping in compliance with BC Health Inspectors, and The Salvation Army Accreditation Standards.

The incumbent’s responsibility for Human Resources:

- The incumbent is responsible as a group/work leader. They are responsible for providing direction and ensuring job performance results from all kitchen workers, whether paid or volunteer; able and willing to work alongside those being supervised.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

**QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS**:
**Education/Certifications**:
Education, Training and Experience including life skills:

- The successful job applicant will have completed Grade 12, or equivalent
- Food Safe Level 1, (Food Safe Level 2 an asset)
- Standard First Aid Certificate
- Professional Cooking Certificate or graduation from a recognized 12 month program in cooking
- 2-5 years of recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- One year previous experience in supervision and budgeting

- The performance of the job requires a frequent amount of standing, squatting, bending, carrying, pushing, and walking; moderate to considerable amounts of lifting. The performance of the job requires frequent attention to proper maintenance and cleanliness of the facility. Adhering to safety procedures and regulations and keeping track of proper cleaning supplies.
- The incumbent is involved in financial matters regularly for the procurement of food supplies and equipment maintenance and has responsibility for adherence to the approved Food Service budgets, including the wise use of all purchased or donated resources. The incumbent will have significant input into the annual budget in collaboration with the Community Ministries Director/Shelter Manager.
- The performance of the job requires frequent attention to the preparation of food, reading recipes, adhering to safety procedures and regulations and coordinating ordering supplies.
- The incumbent is required to lift up to 30 pounds.

**Work Environment**:
The incumbent’s work environment is typically located at the Shelter Buildings, Laundry Room, Kitchen and Parking Lots.

The incumbent will work under the following disagreeable conditions:

- Dealing with angry people
- Verbal Abuse
- Hot/Steamy environment
- Possible cuts and/or burns related to food preparation, and entering freezers
- Pressure with timelines

- Travel may be required.
