**Your role**
- Do you thrive in the fast paced world of live and breaking news? Do you have a wide range of television news experience and a passion for storytelling? Can you go off script in a moment's notice and drive a breaking news story with a calm, cool presence that assures and informs the audience?
- CBC News Network, Canada’s number one live and breaking news network, is looking for a host for its weekend morning programming. This role is an opportunity to connect with Canadians in a unique daypart where news consumption is high and content connection is especially strong. Weekend programming is unique as it requires a blend of the immediate, context and looking ahead, all pulling on a host's skills at breaking news, thoughtful interviews and pushing stories forward.
- You should be attuned to the changing face of Canada and the stories that matter to Canadians in all parts of the country. In addition to relevance in the stories we cover; relatability to the people tuning in is a core strength; so is being a teamplayer.
- You are a leader, both on the editorial and as a member of the team. You are a mentor, a coach and a collaborator. You’ll work in partnership with the Senior Producer of the program to create the most dynamic coverage possible and bring the best out of the team daily. You’ll work to build on the live and breaking mandate of CBC News Network and bring the network’s priorities of immediate, dynamic programming to life every single day.
- You are a natural story-teller with a fearless ability to ask any question. You can translate complex stories into personal terms that make sense for the widest possible audience. And you thrive amid the energy of live conversation and breaking news.
- Insatiable curiosity, openness to diverse perspectives and ideas, and a sense of humour are characteristics you embody as a person and on-air. You also live and promote the values of an inclusive and respectful work culture. All work is governed by an understanding of Journalistic Standards and Practices, and CBC programming policies.- University degree or equivalent-
- At least 5 years of experience in journalism reporting and/or hosting, or in a relevant field.-
- Strong journalistic skills, including critical thinking, writing, storytelling and interviewing-
- Strong connection to urban and/or suburban communities.-
- Engaging, energetic, curious, spontaneous and enthusiastic on-air and online personality.-
- Widely-read, knowledgeable and nuanced thinker with a range of genuine interests in current affairs, politics, arts, culture, sports, business, etc.-
- Deeply engaged with news and current affairs in Canada and abroad, with a particular knowledge or interest in the intersectionality and experiences of BIPOC Canadians.-
- Experience navigating intimate one-on-one conversations and panel discussions.-
- Experience pitching program ideas, guests, topics, lining up interviews, researching and preparing backgrounds.-
- Highly-developed ability to write compelling stories in own voice for on-air and digital media.-
- Experience gathering pieces in the field, recording interviews, field sound and continuity.-
- Knowledge of and creative ideas around the use of social media and digital platforms to connect with and grow audiences.-
- Great team player with proven leadership skills and ability to motivate teams.-
- Ability to function independently and cooperatively in a team environment.-
- Work collaboratively with producers to develop show concepts and continuity.-
- Ability to work effectively under deadline pressure.-
- Experience and genuine interest in building relationships and contacts inside and outside the CBC.-
- Genuinely loves public outreach and embraces the public-facing role of host in the community.-
- Enthusiastic ambassador of public broadcasting and the program.-
