Purpose: The Special Programs Coordinator exists to support the Settlement Program, to assist learners with day to day literacy needs and to oversee special programs and offerings.

**Duties**:

- Working with newcomers and immigrants in the Settlement Program including facilitating English language tutoring, classes and conversation groups, conducting informal language assessments, conducting intakes and assessments with new learners, community outreach to recruit new learners, assisting the Settlement Program Coordinator with program planning, recording statistics, preparing program reports and various duties.
- Assisting drop in learners with literacy and advocacy supports when front line staff are occupied.
- Overseeing the Safe Spaces group, a group dedicated to supporting the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and allies in creating safe spaces.
- Overseeing the Dolly Parton Imagination Library book giving program, including fundraising for the program.
- Overseeing and coordinating special programs that may be planned by the society depending on grants and funding contracts.
- Education:

- Post-secondary experience in any discipline is an asset, or equivalent experience in a related field.

Professional Experience:

- Experience working with adults and families in a learning environment.
- Familiarity with administrative tasks.
- Experience working with vulnerable and marginalized groups.

Knowledge:

- Understanding of literacy issues facing individuals today, including reading, writing, numeracy, and digital literacy.
- Understanding of colonial history and the effects of post-colonialism on Indigenous people today; respect for Indigenous language, history, culture, and identity.
- Understanding of the language and cultural challenges faced by newcomers and immigrants in today’s society.
- Understanding of the importance of trauma-informed support.

Skills and Abilities:

- Cross-cultural communication skills.
- Superior communication skills, both written and oral.
- Excellent computer skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Ability to meet deadlines.
