Course number and title: MMG3201H: Medical Genomics Graduate Professional Development

Course description:
This graduate short course is an integral component of the MHSc Medical Genomics program, and is restricted to students enrolled in that program. The goal of this class is to give students the tools and skills required to navigate their professional futures in the field of Medical Genomics, including but not limited to:

- The generation of an Individual Development Plan (IDP)
- Resume / Curriculum vitae building and optimizing
- Constructing a personal narrative and the importance of storytelling in the job interview process
- Value propositions

This module is comprised of a combination of lecture, discussion, and project-based learning, and will include primarily the assessment of individual work.

Estimated Staff support: full course duration, this module is supported by our Department’s Career Counsellor.

Estimated course enrolment: 23

Class schedule: Alternating weeks, two hours per session.

Sessional dates of appointment: April 15 to June 30, 2024

Salary per term (two term course): $4,728.95 for Sessional Lecturer I; $4,965.40 for Sessional Lecturer I Long Term; $5,060.88 for Sessional Lecturer II; $5,181.38 for Sessional Lecturer III, inclusive of vacation pay.

Qualifications:
The applicant must hold an advanced degree (MHSc or PhD) in the field of genetics, genomics, molecular biology or a related field. The applicant should have at least three years of professional / work experience in their field, and preference will be given to applicants with some previous teaching experience at the University level.

Description of duties:
The course is structured as one two-hour session on alternating weeks from the end of April until the end of June. Most sessions will contain a combination of lecture content delivered by the instructor and discussion or small group work. The instructor is expected to attend all sessions, prepare for the lecture beforehand based on existing lecture content and assignments, and to answer student questions. The instructor will be supported in all contact sessions with the class by the Molecular Genetics Department’s Career Advisor. The approximate time commitment is 2 hours per week.

The course has been taught for five years. The successful applicant will be working with the course materials of the professor who previously taught this course and will have the support of the program director and a Career Advisor. A complete course syllabus, course slides, assignments and answer keys / rubrics, and other critical components have already been designed, optimized, and used successfully. Minimal modification of these materials may be required to update them for use this year.
