The Ministry of Housing is responsible for administering the recently passed Short-Term Rental Accommodations Act (STRAA) and its associated regulations. The new legislation is one of government’s direct responses to BC’s housing challenges and is one of the action commitments in the Province’s April 2023 Homes for People plan. It is a high profile, priority Government initiative. The key goal of the new regulatory regime is to encourage the transfer of “entire home” accommodation properties from short-term rentals to the long-term housing market. It will do this by requiring all short-term rental (STR) offerings to be registered with a new provincial registry and post the registration number in their online listing. The legislation also limits STRs to the hosts’ principal residence, plus one secondary suite or accessory dwelling unit, except where exempt in some areas of the province. STR platforms (e.g., Airbnb, VRBO) will also be required to register.

The Short-Term Rental Branch will facilitate the STR registration requirements and ensure that the STR hosts and platforms abide by the new rules. The Branch includes a Compliance and Enforcement (C&E) Unit, which will be responsible for investigating and enforcing compliance with STRAA and regulations. Delivery of the program requires developing and maintaining productive relationships with the platforms, local governments, short-term rental hosts, and other stakeholders.

The Short-Term Rental Investigator performs inspections, investigations, and/or compliance testing to identify non-compliance with legislation and/or regulations, license conditions or decisions, and impose fines or other sanctions against non-compliant parties. Gathers evidence in preparation for criminal court proceedings.

**Job Requirements**:

- Master’s degree in administrative law, investigation and enforcement, criminology, or a related field and six (6) months of related experience; OR,
- Bachelor’s degree in administrative law, investigation and enforcement, criminology, or a related field and one (1) year of related experience; OR,
- Diploma in administrative law, investigation and enforcement, criminology, or a related field and two (2) years related experience; OR,
- Certificate or competition of post-secondary coursework in administrative law, investigation and enforcement, criminology, or a related field and three (3) years related experience; OR,
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Related experience includes the following:

- Experience in by-law enforcement or inspection and investigation in a regulatory field.
