Indigenous Shelter Diversion Navigator

The Shelter Diversion Worker works with individuals and families to assist in the navigation of systems in order to access supports, navigate through processes and documentation in securing and maintaining safe and stable housing, and to walk alongside them on their path to reclaiming their Indigenous identity through cultural immersion.

**Qualifications**:

- Two (2) year Post-secondary education in Indigenous studies, Social Service work, or a combination of equivalent and relevant education;
- Minimum two (2) years of demonstrated and related work experience within a homelessness and/or social service setting;
- Minimum of 2 years of experience working within an Indigenous organization or community;
- Strong knowledge and awareness of Indigenous culture, and both historical and contemporary Indigenous issues. Emphasis being on the impacts of trauma and community outreach;
- Must have the ability to work collaboratively within the shelters to establish rapport and create a streamlined process to gain access to Indigenous people entering or within the shelter;
- Must have the ability to work collaboratively with the HRIC housing and homelessness programs to develop an inventory of services to coordinate, monitor and support individuals and families in accessing services including but not limited to stock of housing units, substance use, mental health, legal, education and employment services to support reaching their established goals;
- Ability to provide crisis management, advocacy, outreach, information, transportation and other services as required that address the unique needs of Indigenous people;
- Training and/or experience in harm reduction, crisis intervention, and anti-oppressive practices;
- Must have excellent written, verbal, time management, and organizational skills;
- Must be flexible and willing to work occasional evenings and weekends;
- Possess a valid driver’s license with access to a reliable vehicle is an asset and be willing to travel when required; and,
- Ability to obtain a satisfactory CPIC- Vulnerable Sector Search within 30 days of employment start date as a condition of the employment offer.

The Hamilton Regional Indian Centre (HRIC) is a large Indigenous not for profit organization. HRIC is a highly flexible organization offering additional compensation including 5 paid cultural days, 4 paid holidays beyond mandatory Employment Standards, paid shutdown over the Christmas holiday week, and health benefits. HRIC health benefits are offered to full time permanent employees, employees will be able to enroll upon the successful completion of their (3) three-month probationary period.
