Overview

Reporting to the Manager, Nursing and HHR Workforce Initiatives and co-reporting to the Manager, Nursing Innovation and Academic Affairs, the Extern and Learner Coordinator supports the planning, onboarding, orientation, education, and integration of externs and learners within the model of care at Michael Garron Hospital.

**Responsibilities**:
Supports training, integration and development of externs and learners at the organizational and unit level

Contributes to extern and learner onboarding, ongoing education and practice development within the boundaries of each respective role

Design, adapts and deliver orientation and learning resources, using various delivery methods in accordance with organizational and unit policies/practices/guidelines

Aids in the development, implementation, education and evaluations of the extern and learner role, in collaboration with the extern leadership team and the academic affairs leadership team

Evaluates the effectiveness of orientation and education, revises education and learning activities to support changes and professional development

Assists externs and learners to become familiar with the work in their assigned area of practice

Collaborates with unit teams to support externs and learners in providing required patient care

Provides an ongoing presence on the clinical unit(s) to support the ongoing education and development of the externs and learners

Supports preceptors to promote extern and learner success and satisfaction

This a temporary contract full-time position that ends on March 31, 2024 (with the possibility of extension).

Education

Registered Nurse in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario

Master’s degree in nursing or education (or currently in process) is an asset

Current certificate in Basic Cardiac Life Support required

**Qualifications**:
Patient-centred approach to clinical practice

Demonstrates excellent communication, collaboration, and leadership skills

Interest in and experience with mentoring, preceptorship and adult learning

Previous teaching experience (preceptor, clinical instructor, Faculty Advisor, and/or Course instructor) with learners preferred

Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and evidenced-based practice and practice excellence

Minimum of 3 years of experience in acute care in medicine, surgery, complex continuing care, mental health, maternal newborn and child, and/or emergency areas, preferred

Good work and attendance record is required
