Reporting to the OHS Manager, the primary purpose of the Safety Engagement Lead (SEL) is to act as the primary resource, ensuring that health and safety programs are implemented to support a strong positive safety culture based on a continuous improvement model.

As a primary role in OHS leadership for the operational workforce, this position will play a significant role in engagement, compliance, and accountability. As an ambassador for the safety management system, the position will be committed to supporting the organization on OHS matters and establishing a strong positive safety culture based on a continuous improvement model. This position will provide proactive guidance and coaching to field supervisors and staff across the Branch, to support safe operations that meet regulatory requirements.

- Assist with implementing best practices and providing expert OHS advice and guidance to line managers and workers
- Build relationships with internal and external stakeholders
- Lead serious incident investigations, problem-solving, root cause analysis
- Work with Senior Management to ensure compliance with the Alberta OH&S Act, Regulation and Code
- Work to reduce and eliminate workplace injuries through a collaborative partnership with all city departments
- Participate in corporate OHS initiatives and projects and align Branch-initiatives to overall corporate direction
- Lead a productive safety culture to increase employee involvement, education, and recognition
- Educate client departments on compliance with Occupational Health & Safety Legislation, Regulations and City Policy and Procedures
- Provide input and assistance for OHS Business Plan initiatives; implement COR audit recommendations; participate in COR audit as required
- Lead and develop protocols for OHS Audits; perform HSE training as required
- Work collaboratively with Corporate Disability Management to support the Return to Work program and processes
- Influence leadership on decisions that impact the departmental and/or branch strategic direction and operational delivery
- Other related duties as required

**Qualifications**:

- Degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a related discipline such as Occupational Health & Safety with coursework in industrial health and safety
- Four (4) years experience as an OHS professional, with loss prevention experience and working knowledge in areas such as process safety management, safety management system development and implementation, incident/injury prevention, hazard identification, qualitative and quantitative risk analysis. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered

**OR**
- Diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution in Occupational Health & Safety, or a related discipline with coursework in industrial health and safety
- Six (6) years experience as an OHS professional, with loss prevention experience and working knowledge in areas such as process safety management, safety management system development and implementation, incident/injury prevention, hazard identification, qualitative and quantitative risk analysis. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered

**OR**
- Certificate from a recognized post-secondary institution in Occupational Health & Safety, or a related discipline with coursework in industrial health and safety
- Eight (8) years experience as an OHS professional, with loss prevention experience and working knowledge in areas such as process safety management, safety management system development and implementation, incident/injury prevention, hazard identification, qualitative and quantitative risk analysis. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
- Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent).
- Applicants may be required to arrange their own transportation for use on City business, and where appropriate will be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy
- Must have first-hand experience and considerable knowledge of high-risk work activities such as confined space entry, fall protection and ground disturbance. supported by valid training certificates
- Experience working in a unionized environment
- Knowledge of OH&S legislative requirements under the Act, Legislation and Code
- Use their interpersonal and communication skills to convey knowledge and gain compliance on complex health and safety issues and concerns within various work environments
