Within many Indigenous communities, Elders and Knowledge Keepers are respected for their wisdom, cultural knowledge, language, ceremonies, and gifts that have been nurtured over time. The Elders and Knowledge Holders Circle act as advisors to the City of Edmonton Indigenous Relations Office. Their role is to culturally guide the implementation of the Indigenous Framework across administration and to help guide the city on the journey to truth and reconciliation.

As an Elders and Knowledge Holders Liaison in the Indigenous Relations Office (IRO), your role will be critical in supporting Elders and Knowledge Holders in their work. Working with Elders and Knowledge Holders requires a specialized set of skills including an in-depth understanding of and appreciation for the role of Elders and Knowledge Holders within Indigenous communities.

As the Liaison, you will work with Elders, Knowledge Holders, and City colleagues, bringing together traditional ways of knowing and being, using protocols within the organization to achieve the goals of the Indigenous framework.

As the Elders and Knowledge Holders Liaison, you will:

- Develop and maintain meaningful relationships with Elders & Knowledge Holders from diverse First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities
- Understand cultural protocols and work with Elders/ Knowledge Holders to ensure protocols are observed and maintained
- Provide critical support to the Elder’s Circle and City team members when planning cultural or ceremonial events as required.
- Coordination and support for event planning such as: Indigenous Peoples History Month, National Truth and Reconciliation Day, Orange Shirt Day, Ben Calf Robe Pow Wow, and the Moosehide Campaign (among others)
- Liaise between Elders/Knowledge Holders and provide support as the main point of contact when a request for services is received
- Coordinate, administer, and manage schedules, invites, events, and meetings as requested
- Respectfully answer questions and provide guidance as needed
- Work closely and collaboratively with a wide range of City of Edmonton staff as may be required

**Qualifications**:

- Completion of the twelfth (12th) school grade
- A minimum of five (5) years of experience (at least 1 year of professional experience and 4 years of lived experience) in Indigenous communities, working with Indigenous peoples, and/or Elders/Knowledge Holders
- Previous experience organizing and planning Indigenous cultural, ceremonial or community events
- Lived experience, knowledge, training and/or education related to First Nations, Metis, and Inuit communities
- Previous experience building and maintaining relationships with Indigenous partners and community
- Experience using effective communication skills, such as: writing, speaking, reporting and sharing with an Indigenous lens

**Assets**:

- Knowledge and use of Indigenous languages
- A minimum of one year experience in a large, complex organization (such as government, education or health care)
- Experience chairing or coordinating committees
- A university degree or diploma/certificate in human services, Indigenous relations, social science, social work, human ecology or related.
- Previous experience providing advice, policy development or research on UNDRIP, Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Calls to Action, Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) Calls for Justice

- A significant knowledge and understanding of Indigenous culture, practices, communities, history, culture and current environment
- Understanding of Indigenous governance systems and structures
- Excellent oral and written communication skills and your ability to communicate across difference
- Your ability to build and maintain strong relationships with Indigenous community
- Your ability to plan, coordinate and provide support to complex projects, documents, and events.
- Your ability to develop processes for document creation, funding processes and event management.
- Your ability to manage multiple, competing priorities to achieve optimal results
