Reporting to the Director, Professional Practice, the Practice Standards Manager is responsible for managing the Professional Practice standards, guidelines, and bulletins that allow APEGA licensed professionals and permit holders to fulfil their legal, professional and ethical obligations.

**Responsibilities**:

- Developing and maintaining APEGA’s practice standards guidelines and bulletins and coordinating the revision process to update when required
- Coordinating the development, delivery and maintenance of regulatory education including seminars related to the Continuing Professional Development Program, Permit to Practice Seminars and all practice standards and guidelines that support professional practice
- Administering Professional Practice’s volunteer management and recruitment to support the Practice Review Board and other committees
- Supporting other regulatory functions such as legislative interpretation and implementation, licensing, investigations, or enforcement in issues related to the assessment of professional conduct and skilled practice of licensed professionals
- Manage APEGA’s Practice Standards Program to ensure licensed professionals’ and permit holders’ practice competently and ethically in accordance with the EGP Act
- Advising the Director, Professional Practice and Executive Leadership of professional practice trends that require attention
- Managing volunteers within professional practice
- Facilitating the practice of engineering and geoscience within Alberta and nationally, as the liaison with Engineers Canada
- Supervising and managing the Practice Standards team, including budget management

Skills & Attributes
- Good familiarity with engineering and/or geoscience requirements across several industry sectors or disciplines, as well experience in an operating or consulting role
- Strong knowledge of developing standards or operating procedures
- Strong knowledge of the APEGA practice standards library
- Good knowledge of the principles of adult education and developing education material
- Familiarity with other legislation that affects APEGA (OHS, PIPA, PIPEDA, FOIP, Alberta Building Code etc.)
- Recognition of other industry codes and standards (ASME, CSA Group etc.)
- Able to transition between critical thinking and lateral thinking. Critical thinking focuses on judging the true value of statements and seeking errors; lateral thinking is more concerned moving from one known idea to creating innovative ideas
- Able to read situations and people accurately, developing options for mutual benefit
- Understands the organization’s strategy, objectives, and goals and aligns individual effort accordingly
- Driven and able to independently identify areas that require attention
- Able to manage change and transition, and able to work with diverse groups of people in diverse environments
- Able to manage confidential information appropriately, understanding that professional reputations and credibility are important commodities
- Able to prioritize request from multiple internal and external stakeholders to meet deadlines
- Strong conflict resolution and negotiation skills, adept at identifying win/win solutions.
- Practical and innovative problem-solving skills
- High attention to detail and accuracy
- Proven skills in communicating ideas, providing recommendations, project and process concepts both verbal and written
- Strong skills in setting and tracking priorities, defining performance objectives and goals, and measuring outcomes
- Understands that technology can make their job easier. Searches for ways to integrate technology into their work and seeks opportunities for improving overall operations through the innovative use of emerging technology and new software

**Qualifications**:

- Professional Engineer or Geoscientist either registered with APEGA or eligible for membership.
- 10+ years of progressive leadership experience with at least 5 years at the senior management level
- Prior experience in a regulated industry, working as a regulator, or as part of a government agency with knowledge of regulatory processes/legislation is an asset.
- Equivalencies may be considered.
