Clinical Forensic Coordinator, Forensic Outpatient

To coordinate forensic patient movement between facilities, community agencies, courts, jails and the Ontario Review Board (ORB), collaborate with patient flow, to review and finalize Ontario Review Board reports, coordinate forensic databases, to provide education and training to Ontario Shores staff and external stakeholders on forensic issues and practices, and participate in research and evaluation relating to the forensic population, programs and services.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Coordinating the movement of forensic patients, from other facilities and between other facilities and courts and detention centres.
- Collaborate with the patient flow manager regarding movement of forensic patient throughout the facility and between facilities;
- Collecting and reviewing information regarding past psychiatric history, index offence and forensic assessments to assist in determining required level of security.
- Monitoring admission requests and inpatient flow to ensure appropriate placement of forensic patients.
- Communicating the outcome of court proceedings to the appropriate programs and departments.
- Assisting in the determination of patients’ readiness to return to court (e.g., contacting lawyers, court clerks, etc.).
- Contributing to the development of movement/transfer procedures.
- Providing consultation to medical staff on Criminal Code (Canada), court-related, Ontario Review Board matters.
- Organizing and maintaining forensic databases and statistics.
- Updating records of admissions, pending admissions and transfers.
- Coordinating the preparation and completion of ORB and ORB-related reports.
- Performing a liaison role with Ontario Shores’ legal counsel(s) regarding patients under the jurisdiction of the ORB.
- Participating in forensic research and evaluation.
- Providing education and training to Ontario Shores staff and external stakeholders on forensic issues and practices.
- Performing other duties as assigned by the Administrative Director, Forensic Program.
- Responsible to recognize and report patient, staff, and environment safety issues, identify and implement preventative and corrective actions, within the scope of this role
- Qualifications Required and PreferredSTAFFING & LICENSING REQUIREMENTS
Registered Nurse
Current Registration with the College of Nurses with a minimum of two (2) years related experience.
KNOWLEDGE
Job requires knowledge of mental health and forensics, the Mental Health Act, the Criminal Code (Canada), and the Public Hospitals Act, to ensure effective communication with all clinical and administrative staff regarding forensic transactions at Ontario Shores as well as with external stakeholders; knowledge forensic services throughout the Province of Ontario, the Ontario Review Board (ORB) and Dispositions, court Orders, and Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and ORB directives pertinent to forensic patients; to be a resource for managers, clinicians and programs regarding Ontario Review Board matters; and knowledge of hospital procedures and relevant administrative policies to promote compliance, consistency and ensure patient safety.
SKILLS
Job requires reasoning skills to elicit and interpret information from patients and other sources, identify problems, evaluate information and draw conclusions to assist in the development of a patient transfer plan; analytical skills to participate in research and evaluation relating to the forensic population, programs and services, using forensic databases and statistics; and analytical skills to collect, study and interpret clinical and administrative data (e.g., reviewing prepared ORB reports) to ensure that standards are met.
Job requires oral and written communication skills to act as a contact person for many forensic transactions and to communicate with all levels of Ontario Shores staff, clinicians, Ontario Review Board, related agencies and patients (e.g., contacting lawyers and court clerks to inform them that patients are ready to return to court; negotiating with legal counsels, judges, police and detention centre staff for transfer of patients); communicating policies and procedures to representatives of the legal system to eliminate misconceptions.
Job requires excellent oral and written communication skills, including use of mental health, justice, and medical terminology, to communicate effectively when managing cross-sectoral (e.g., police, courts, legal counsels, health professionals) issues pertaining to patients, when providing education and training to Ontario Shores staff and external stakeholders, for the finalization of ORB reports, and for any other reports relating to the forensic population, programs and services.
