The McGill Mastercard Foundation Transitions Project’s goal is to facilitate Scholars’/Alums’ transition into the workforce for impact across Africa, building on the Scholars Program supporting academic success of talented Africans committed to giving back to their communities.

Position Summary:
Under the supervision of the Program Manager of

Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program

, the incumbent is the primary contact for the MCF Scholars and other units at McGill supporting the Scholars Program. To meet the needs of the individual students, the Program Advisor advises, guides and connects Scholars to support resources provided by specialists throughout Student Services and other units of Student Life and Learning (SLL). The incumbent makes recommendations to the Program Manager that will have a direct impact on improving or modifying the Program; ensures compliance with both University and Mastercard Foundation regulations and practices. Assist in guiding or facilitating learning opportunities that center on leadership, mentoring, transition support and skills development.

Primary Responsibilities:
Responsible for Student Development, Academic Success, Internship Support as well as Reporting, Assessment and Outreach for all Mastercard Foundation Scholars. Provides support to Scholars throughout their academic programs by:

- Under the direction of the Program Manager, plans, develops and implements procedures, policies and processes to support the delivery and administration of programs that support student participants in the Mastercard Scholars Program.
- Via both one-on-one advising sessions as well as group advising sessions, provides efficient, high-level individual support to cohorts of Scholars, at various stages of the student life cycle from pre-arrival and orientation to graduation; referring them to appropriate on campus, and community resources when barriers emerge.
- Develop and deliver programming materials (workshops, events, info sessions etc.) to build on skills and competencies based on the Scholars Program objectives, such as transformative leadership, post-graduation internships, entrepreneurial endeavors, professional development and alumni engagement, throughout their student life cycle at McGill.
- Identifying workshops and on-campus opportunities on relevant topics such as academic expectations, intercultural communications, identity, engagement, giving back, etc.
- Developing contacts that will help to connect Scholars to the Mastercard Foundation community and resources via online platforms.
- Focusing on facilitating short-term internship and professional development opportunities for scholars, to assist in the transition period, post-graduation that align with the ethos of the Foundation.
- Liaising and networking with external known and new partners (in Africa and /or Canada) that may act as host organizations for Scholars undertaking internships.
- Partnering with on-campus resources, such as Career Planning Service, School of Continuing Studies, Dobson Centre for Entrepreneurship, in the preparation of programming to support and enhance internship experiences.
- Maintain program-specific databases and participate in the completion and submission of reports as required by the Foundation.
- Communicating with Graduate Program Coordinators to ensure Scholars follow program requirements and Advisor recommendations. Taking an early intervention approach to support retention and academic success of the Scholars.
- Developing opportunities to connect Scholars with other African-related projects within and outside the McGill community.

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities
- Master’s degree, an asset.
- Experience developing and delivering workshops in Student Development and Identity, Intercultural Communications and Leadership, preferred.
- International work experience in Africa or in developing countries, an asset.
- Highly motivated with a demonstrated ability to build constructive and effective relationships with multiple stakeholders.
- Must possess strong organizational skills and be able to function at a high-level of responsiveness and effectiveness within a complex, fast-paced office environment.
- Must possess strong networking skills, along with a professional attitude, diplomacy and ability to mobilize others to reach objectives in a team environment.
- Creative and progressive, problem-solving, analytical thinking.
- Ability to work collegially, deploying both formal and informal authority; good judgment.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast-moving, customer-focused environment; ability to provide high-quality service in a timely manner.
