Health Specialist

The Catholic Children's Aid Society of Toronto requires a permanent Health Specialist to provide professional Health Services to infants, young children and their families. This service will include health assessments, consultation with staff and related collaterals, health promotion and disease prevention.
**Duties**:
Recognize the impact of trauma on families and prioritize an equitable approach to health and developmental assessments.
Engage with families to understand their unique contexts and challenges, fostering trust and open communication.
Conduct thorough assessments to evaluate the physical and emotional safety of infants and children.
Assess caregivers’ ability to meet their children’s health and safety needs, identifying barriers to support.
Utilize a strengths-based lens to identify family resources and capabilities alongside their needs.
Conduct applicable health and developmental screening (Ages and Stages, Social Emotional-2, Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale) create developmental support plans, and tailored health and development education.
Act as a communication bridge between families and healthcare providers to facilitate referrals and access to services.
Work closely with Child Protection Workers in obtaining relevant health information and assist in interpreting medical diagnoses and treatment plans to ensure comprehensive support for families.
Complete documentation accurately and in a timely manner in accordance with the requirements of the College of Nurses of Ontario and Catholic Children’s Aid Society of Toronto;
Provide evidence for child protection court proceedings as required;
Arrange for, and or developing/implementing health promotion related educational and training sessions for staff and caregivers
Participate in the ongoing development, revision and evaluation of the Health Support Program.
Qualifications Required
Registered Nurse, with current registration in good standing with the College of Nurses in Ontario;
Minimum of BScN or equivalent education and experience;
Minimum three years of nursing experience;
Ability to work in a safe manner in accordance with the Society's Health and Safety Policies, The College of Nurses of Ontario and all relevant legislation;
Knowledge of relevant legislation including the Child, Youth and Family Service Acts (2017) the Regulated Health Professions Act, Nursing Act (1991), The Ontario Mental Health Act, Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act;
Experience in pediatric nursing, community health and child welfare in order to oversee the provision of health support services within the CCAS;
Excellent clinical knowledge/skills in regard to pediatrics (health assessment, nutrition, infant mental health and child development, child health etc.) and ability to relate this to child welfare;
Advanced knowledge of child development with particular focus on infant mental health of children 0 - 5 years old;
Excellent interpersonal skills;
Ability to work independently and in collaboration with team members and other professionals within a multi-disciplinary teams;
Good leadership and organizational skills;
Prepared to work with families who identify as Catholic or who plan to raise their children Catholic;
Ability to work in a cross-cultural context with ethno-racial and equity deserving communities and groups;
Demonstrated sensitivity to diverse cultural beliefs and the varying health and child rearing practices;
Demonstrated understanding of, and commitment to working with diverse populations in service delivery and in team relationships through the integration of the values in the CCAS Mission Statement, the principles of equity and justice, non-discrimination and accessibility;
Ability to identify emerging health issues in the broader community and develop and implement education on health-related areas.
Assets
Experience in the child welfare sector;
Fluency in a Spanish or Tagalog;
Community health experience;
Pediatric experience
