Personal Support Worker

**This is a 12 month term position with the possibility of an extension**

The Personal Support Worker provides support to the General Manager with personalized care for clients of the Spruce Bough Supportive Living by promoting independence, providing assistance and support for functional challenges with activities of daily living (ADL). This care needs to be within the the mission, values and policies of the Yellowknife Women’s Society (YKWS). There is not just one solution to providing support so Personal Support Workers need to be able to create individualized plans for their clients. Personal Support Workers need to be aware of all services available in the supportive living facility and in the community that might assist an individual resident within the Spruce Bough. Some facilities might have formal partnerships with other programs that come into the building or provide off-site services; others will just require a referral. Personal Support Workers need to remember that for the resident the shelter is their home, transitional or temporary as it may be.

**Client Assessment and Individualized Care**:

- Conduct thorough assessments of residents to understand their unique needs, challenges, and goals.

Develop and implement individualized care plans that address specific issues related to complex needs, alcohol addiction, mental health, trauma, multiple comorbidities, physical disabilities, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), discrimination, and wound care.

**Trauma-Informed Care**:

- Create a safe and welcoming environment that respects residents' histories of trauma.
- Use trauma-informed approaches to promote healing, resilience, and emotional safety among residents.
- Recognize and respond to trauma triggers in a sensitive manner.

**Mental Health Support**:

- Monitor residents for signs of distress or mental health symptoms.
- Provide emotional support and crisis intervention when residents are experiencing mental health crises.
- Collaborate with mental health professionals to ensure residents receive appropriate care.

**Wound Care**:

- Perform wound assessments to determine the status of wounds and injuries.
- Administer appropriate wound care, including dressing changes, infection control, and wound monitoring.
- Maintain accurate wound care records and report any concerns to healthcare providers.

**Incontinence Care**:

- Assist residents with incontinence management, including changing adult diapers and maintaining cleanliness and comfort.
- Provide respectful and dignified care for individuals dealing with incontinence issues.
- Monitor and address any skin integrity concerns related to incontinence.

**Medication Management**:

- Administer medications to residents as prescribed, ensuring compliance with medication schedules.
- Monitor medication side effects and report any adverse reactions to medical professionals.
- Educate residents about their medications and their proper use.

**Documentation and Reporting**:

- Maintain detailed and up-to-date records of all resident interactions, care provided, and incidents.
- Prepare and submit accurate reports on a regular basis to ensure effective communication within the facility.

**Term employees receive their holiday pay on each pay cheque and are not eligible for**
**paid personal leave or paid sick leave.**

**REQUIREMENTS (Typically, the above qualifications would be obtained by)**:

- **Level of Knowledge equivalent to that acquired through the Personal Support Worker certificate program offered at Aurora College**:

- Updated immunization and criminal records check.
- Current CPR and First Aid Certification.
- Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certification (preferred).

**Salary**: From $27.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40 per week
