The International Transition Support Coordinator (ITSC) works as part of a team to facilitate onboarding, mentoring, and settlement of internationally educated nurses (IENs) to VON, within the local community. The ITSC will focus on retention of IENs by providing the support needed by IENs and their families to integrate into the community successfully.

**Key Responsibilities**:

- Provides transition support by creating a plan to address identified gaps in clinical or cultural practice and facilitating the completion of the required education/training, familiarizing IENS with Canadian workplace culture and practice.
- Identifies resources and develops/provides education to IENs to bridge gaps/differences in scope from international nursing practice to Continuing Care Assistant (CCA) practice in province of practice (i.e. Health and Safety practices, patient handling, body mechanics, client mobility assistance).
- Assists IENs with settlement support and conducts regular check-ins.
- Providing a bespoke and consultative service to all IENs, assessing requirements, and making recommendations in line with individual needs.
- Prepares and maintains, records and reports to assist the management team in assessing the requirements for the orientation/onboarding process for IENs including workplace culture training needs.
- Provides input to managers to build education and learning plans for IENs
- Provide education on cooking for VON clients, including how to use Canadian appliances and learning to cook foods our clients enjoy.
- Provides education to IENs as needed, including orientation, diversity and including training, and ensures onboarding best practices are standard across all sites.
- Ensures IENs are provided with the necessary tools, information, and resources to transition to VON, homecare and their new community successfully.
- Acts as a resource and mentor for IENs in their role as a CCA performing mentoring visits with IENs as required.
- Research, collect, and organizes up-to-date settlement-related information to understand the network of community and settlement supports available.
- In Nova Scotia assists with Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Program enrollment, acts as a resource, and tracks RPL program participation and progress.
- Creates and maintains informational resources for IENs who want to obtain their provincial Nursing Licence.

- Promotes the goals and values of VON and their role as an integrated community care provider.
- Promotes a safe and healthy workplace ensuring workplace conduct and activities are in accordance with the provincial Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and compliant with the VON Safety Management System, including all Policies, Safe Work Practices and Procedures.
- Abides by all VON policies and work practices.
- Abides by all confidentiality and protection of personal information policies, regulations and practices and ensures appropriate safeguards are in place within their role.
- Works in collaboration with other staff in a team approach to service delivery.

**External and Internal Relationships**:

- Develops effective internal relationships across departments to facilitate achievement of objectives and responsibilities within this role.
- Interact with various community agencies and local multicultural groups to optimize workplace and community settlement and orientation experience.
- Interacts with organizations, associations and provincial nursing college.
- Regularly liaises/communicates proactively and constructively with Community Settlement Services and other community organizations to ensure IENs receive current information on the types of community programs availble to assist with their transition.

**Education, Designations, and Experience**:

- Post-secondary education as a Nurse licensed with Nova Scotia College of Nurses (NSCN) or post-secondary education in a related field.
- 2 years’ experience in community healthcare, settlement services or related position.
- Experience with mentoring and training.
- Understanding and awareness of the newcomer experience and settlement process.
- Experience working with a diverse workforce.
- Familiarity and understanding of the role of a Continuing Care Assistant preferred.
- Knowledge of settlement organizations & the services offered, as well as other community/government organizations that support settlement/education/training and experience facilitating settlement, is considered an asset.
- Understanding and awareness of challenges IENs experience transiting to a Canadian Healthcare workplace and during settlement is considered an asset.
