**Position Summary**

Under the direction of the First Nation Family Advocate Office (FNFAO), the MMIWG2S+ Advocate will work with First Nations citizens who are involved with the child welfare system in Manitoba and who may be at risk of, or who are currently experiencing exploitation or violence. The MMIWG2S+ Advocate will provide culturally appropriate services and support to assist those impacted by this crisis of MMIWG2S+ on their journey by ensuring their safety and security and helping to restore identity, place and belonging.

**Key Responsibilities**
- Works directly with clients of FNFAO who are at risk or deemed to be at risk of sexual exploitation, victims of violence, or becoming missing to ensure their safety and well-being.
- Supports families in seeking justice by providing assistance in the investigation of Missing and/or Murdered First Nations Women, Girls and 2S+.
- Develops a comprehensive trauma-informed response to when First Nations children and youth are missing.
- Provides preventative, culturally appropriate support to First Nations children and youth that are involved with the Child and Family Services (CFS) system to nurture their spiritual, mental, emotional and physical well-being.
- Provides casework management of a specialized caseload, as appropriate to the requirements of the individual’s position and performs case-by-case assessments.
- Ensures there is a proper transition care plan for youth leaving the CFS system.
- Assists First Nations women and/or families involved with the CFS system to improve access to their children in care and to work towards reunification.
- Works with families who may have lost their loved ones due to MMIWG2S+ and works to ensure access to their children.
- Improves awareness of MMIWG2S+ issues to increase public support for families.
- Connects First Nations individuals who need resources such as housing, EIA, education & employment, etc.
- Seeks resources to open a 24-hour safe space for Women, Girls and 2SLGBTQQIA+ individuals who are experiencing family violence.
- Reviews reports on regional and national issues and other developments relevant to MMIWG2S+.
- Develops and maintains a network of support with community organizations to provide effective services to First Nations families impacted by the MMIWG2S+ crisis.
- Establishes a trusting relationship with staff through clear communication and teamwork.
- Attends meetings and/or conferences and provides reports and statistics on service delivery as required.
- Other duties as assigned.

**Qualifications**

**Education & Experience**
- Bachelor of Social Work, Indigenous Studies or a related discipline. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- At least 4 years’ experience in case management supporting First Nations families involved with social service systems, MMIWG2S+ and/or navigating challenges that affect First Nations.
- Strong experience with crisis intervention techniques, and other mental health interventions.
- Ability to maintain emotional stability and a strong network of support while coping with experiences of human suffering, emergencies, loss of life and other stressors.
- Working knowledge of the 231 Calls to Justice from the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG).
- Knowledge of First Nations culture, history, treaty, and inherent rights.
- Experience working with First Nations and First Nation organizations and/or entities.
- Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal communication and presentation skills.
- Demonstrated ability to provide analytical support while managing multiple projects and deadlines.
- Proficient use of Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Be able to follow office practices, procedures, and confidentiality.
- Knowledge of First Nation people and communities.
- Ability to work flexible hours and be able to travel upon request.
- Must have a valid Class 5 Driver’s License and a reliable vehicle.
- Must have a current satisfactory Criminal Record Check, Clear Adult and Child Abuse Checks.
