The mission of Western’s Centre for Brain and Mind is to provide a centralized and visible presence for cognitive neuroscience at Western University. The Institute's primary functions are to promote research, to facilitate the training of highly qualified personnel, and to foster national and international collaborations in cognitive neuroscience.
**Responsibilities**:
The Research Technician will oversee the research team (e.g. undergraduate and graduate students) involved in recruitment and data collection, and coordinate with postdoctoral scholars and Principal Investigators to ensure grant timelines are met. The Research Technician will work in collaboration to support the effective operation of the laboratory, train and oversee students, order supplies, and ensure compliance with safety standards, human ethics and data security. The Research Technician will liaise with local organizations and clinics to recruit and schedule participants and will maintain a recruitment database. The Research Technician is responsible for research data management from collection through analysis. The Research Technician will make recommendations for, and assist with determining, the optimal protocols and equipment for use in the conduct of experiments. The Research Technician will participate in the compilation, analysis and presentation of results for dissemination. The Research Technician will support research through assisting with the operation, installation, modification, troubleshooting and servicing of equipment and instrumentation.
**Qualifications**:
**Education**:
- 4 year university Bachelor of Science degree (BSc) in psychology, neuroscience, or a related field
- Masters in psychology, neuroscience, or a related field is preferred
**Experience**:
- 3 years experience working in a research-intensive laboratory environment
- Experience working in a cognitive neuroscience lab with EEG
- Experience working with children, youth and families
- Experience with MATLAB and Python is preferred
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Familiarity with methods for human research design, implementation, and analysis
- Familiarity with regulations and guidelines governing research ethics and data security in an academic environment
- Familiarity and expertise with collecting behavioral measures and multi-sensor neural research data primarily using EEG
- Experience with conducting human research
- Ability to collaborate and develop credible relationships with a wide variety of individuals, internal and external to Western
- Familiarity with quantitative and qualitative research methodologies and analyses in psychology and neuroscience research
- Familiarity with techniques for updating, managing and extracting data from a research database
- Familiarity with preventative maintenance techniques and practices
- Communication skills with an ability to describe technical concepts effectively to both novice and sophisticated users and document technical information
- Verbal and written communication skills with an ability to complete detailed analytics, reports, presentations, posters, infographics, lay summaries, and concise and accurate procedural documentation
- Attention to detail with an ability to retrieve, analyze and synthesize sizable amounts of data, while ensuring that information is accurate and comprehensive
- Ability to follow formal processes and protocols with high attention to detail
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, meet tight deadlines and adapt to changing priorities
- Computer skills with the ability to learn and use software programs
- Intermediate computer skills in Python and MATLAB
- Excellent troubleshooting ability along with hands-on expertise in technical support
- Intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite
- Demonstrated ability take initiative, to work independently and follow through on work assignments
- Personable and courteous in working relationships with colleagues, students and the public
- Ability to investigate defined issues, solicit input, and suggest remedies and alternative approaches that meet the needs of the situation
- Ability to identify key results from research and to summarize and draft reports on research findings
- Ability to interact professionally with students, staff, faculty, other members of the University community and community external to Western
- Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team to achieve department goals
