The Department of Physiology and Pharmacology is the largest basic medical science department within the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry. Our mission is to carry out world-class scientific research and evidence based teaching. We have award-winning teachers who are committed to delivering high-quality and innovative education at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. In addition, our department has a strong focus on research excellence with faculty members recognized internationally for their achievements.
The Pin laboratory undertakes research to understand the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying pancreatic diseases such as pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer. The laboratory is particularly interested in the role of factors that regulate cell stress, gene transcription and calcium signaling pathways contributing to exocrine pancreas differentiation and disease. For this purpose, the laboratory currently maintains several genetically engineered mouse strains, various cells lines and a patient-derived organoid facility for translational research.
**Responsibilities**:
The Research Technician will work under the direction of the Principal Investigator to support translation research understanding the role selected genes and pathways play in patient-specific differences in pancreatic cancer. The role will oversee the development of new organoid models involving established protocols in the laboratory, maintain a living biobank associated with the Baker Centre for Pancreatic Cancer, and provide training and support of individuals interested in learning organoid-based research. The Research Technician will provide technical assistance and advice to students, postdoctoral scholars and researchers on laboratory procedures and equipment techniques. The role will support the maintenance, troubleshooting and servicing of equipment and instrumentation related to the research with the recently-finished organoid facility within the Verspeeten Family Cancer Centre.
**Qualifications**:
**Education**:
- 4 year University Bachelor’s Degree in Biology or Biotechnology
**Experience**:
- 3 years’ experience working in a research-intensive laboratory environment including experience culturing cell lines, data management and with various molecular biological analyses
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Knowledge of and ability in culturing cell lines and three-dimensional cultures
- Organizational skills to maintain accurate records of a biobank
- Familiarity with methods for research design, implementation, and analysis
- Familiarity with preventative maintenance techniques and practices including the ability to maintain microscope equipment
- Excellent troubleshooting ability along with hands-on expertise in technical support
- Ability to follow formal processes and protocols with high attention to detail
- Ability to employ a systematic and efficient approach to work
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, meet tight deadlines and adapt to changing priorities
- Intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite with the ability to learn and use software programs; higher level understanding of spreadsheets and data input
- Ability to multi-task and maintain an organized and effective personal work environment
- Personable and courteous in working relationships with colleagues, students and the public
- Ability to identify key results from research and to summarize and draft reports on research findings
- Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team to achieve department goals
- Ability to work within a flexible schedule to accommodate the events and activities of the laboratory
