Research & Development Technician

Dr. Oetker is a state-of-the-art Pizza Production Facility in London, Ontario. With our Head Quarters in Germany, and operations in over 40 countries around the world, we are an international company with deep family roots dating back to 1891. Our London facility which employees about 300 associates showcases modern, highly automated, high volume production lines where we produce Ristorante, Casa di Mama and Giuseppe pizzas under the Dr. Oetker label. Our facility is part of the International Pizza Production Unit (PPU) which, in part, identifies projects and efficiencies for execution at plant level.
In our facility, we start with raw materials such as flour and yeast to make a great pizza crust, topping with sauce and ingredients to make a fantastic, finished pizza and then freezing and packaging the pizzas for retail distribution.
Reporting to the Head of R & D, the **Research and Development Technician** will:
- Support plant trials and first production (first 3 productions) and participate in the product innovation cycle
- Assist in cost optimization in current and new product lines to achieve the company’s operational and marketing objectives.
- Maintain and perform shelf-life testing of retained and reformulated products.
- Assist and support the sustainable development of new products that adhere to the corporate and local laws and guidelines
- Maintain formulas in PDM (SAP where applicable)
- Support the Product Developer in the assessment and approval (or non-approval) of raw materials utilized by the Dr. Oetker production facilities
- Perform laboratory testing, sensory analysis and product shelf-life assessments for a period of time within the development stage
- Collect, analyze and decipher data to effectively maximize product and process longevity and best practices
- Provide support to production when it relates to formulation (product) requirements, visual standards and training support when necessary
- Organize and coordinate food preparation for product sampling, sensory panel evaluation and competitive product analysis
- Design and execute laboratory testing according to standard procedures, make observations and interpret findings
- Conduct experiments under defined conditions to verify/reject various types of hypotheses using refined scientific methods
- Participate in intracompany and international working groups
**Skills & Qualifications**
- Post Secondary Education in Science or equivalent
- 1-2 years’ experience in a food manufacturing environment. Additional nutrition or culinary experience would be an asset.
- Detailed oriented, organized person with effective communications skills and understanding of ISO and FSSC processes.
- Competencies of time management, organizing, decision-making, action oriented and “Can do Attitude” with a willingness to learn.
- Working knowledge, experience of lab equipment and lab environment
- Being part of an international team open to ideation, integration and communication.
- Excellent communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills.
- Flexibility of work hours due to production needs and plant trials
