Civil Estimator

Objectives:
Responsible for the preparation of estimates and project take-offs for all bids relating to CIVIL. Perform all functions and responsibilities in accordance with Varcon’s values and beliefs.
**Essential Functions/Responsibilities**:
- Review proposal specifications and drawings to determine scope of work. Assist in the preparation/coordination of cost estimates. Prepare quantity take-off of materials and identify subcontracted work as required in the bid tendering process.
- Prepare full cost estimates including complete take-offs and soliciting pricing from subcontractors
- Conduct thorough reviews of proposal specifications and project documents, interpret drawings and bid packages
- Assist in post tender submissions and tender negotiations
- Participate in closing of estimates and submission of tenders
- Preparation and maintenance of project cost reports
- Help to identify leads and securement opportunities through contacts with clients, consultants, subcontractors and others in the construction industry
- Lead Estimating group, including Jr. Estimators and consultants
- Assess contract documents and prepare detailed cost estimates of the construction requirements
- Collects and analyzes pricing from subcontractors and suppliers
- Collaborate with Project management team to establish major Purchase Orders and subcontracts for new projects
- Establish the Project budgets to be used in the costing system
- Assist with the construction team in the preparation of change orders and the assessment of claims
- Responsible for accurate take-off of quantities from project drawings
- Responsible for the preparation and documentation of project estimates using Hard Dollar estimating package
- Incorporates addendums to plans and specifications into on-going estimates
- Interprets project drawings and specifications
- Prepares the original schedule on which the bid estimate is assembled
- Monitors trade publications for project leads
- Reviews job cost reports to determine where estimating can be improved
- Identifies risk areas and brings them to the attention of Risk Management
- Costs out potential scope of work changes and Value Engineering possibilities
- Prepares bid presentation for senior management
- Carries out special projects as requested
**OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Prepare estimates of probable costs of materials, labour and equipment for civil works construction projects based on contract bids, quotations, schematic drawings and specifications
- Strong relationship skills to be maintained with both internal and external customers including customers, suppliers, financial partners, operations team and corporate executives
- Advise on tendering procedures, examine and analyze tenders, recommend tender awards and conduct negotiations
- Establish and maintain tendering process, set up cost monitoring, reporting systems and procedures
- Coordinate price packages with suppliers, subcontractors, owners, designers and architects regarding tenders
- Participates in site review, tender review, tender hand-off, project closing and operational/sector meetings with the Chief Estimator, Project Manager, and Purchasing as required
- Prepare and maintain a directory of suppliers, contractors and subcontractors
- Liaise, consult and communicate with engineers, architects, owners, contractors and subcontractors, and prepare economic feasibility studies on changes and adjustments to cost estimates
