The Edmonton Community Legal Centre (ECLC) is seeking a Learning and Development Specialist to join our organization on a full-time permanent basis. The Learning and Development Specialist is a new ECLC position, which will be responsible for student recruitment, orientation, support, and professional development, to ensure a valuable learning experience for students, as well as optimum benefit for the ECLC.

The Learning and Development Specialist will be the key point of contact for the ECLC’s practicum students, summer law clerks, and articling students. The ECLC typically hosts 7 U of A law students for clinical placements, and hires 6 summer law clerks. We expect to hire 3 - 7 articling students each year. In addition, we provide student practicum placements for social workers, legal assistants, human ecologists, and other disciplines. The Learning and Development Specialist will join our staff team of 28, which includes six staff lawyers, and a multi-disciplinary client support team, working in cooperation with 400 volunteers each year, including 250 volunteer lawyers. The Learning and Development Specialist will work closely with ECLC staff lawyer principals who supervise the legal work of articling students, to ensure a successful articling experience for students, clients, and the ECLC.

Responsibilities include:

- Work with other staff members to determine the need for student positions and ensure students have appropriate and meaningful work
- Recruit and interview students for various positions
- Coordinate new student orientation
- Support students with reflective learning and mental wellbeing through regular mentorship
- Develop, organize, and implement learning opportunities for students to prepare them for their chosen profession
- Coordinate student evaluation and exit from the agency at the conclusion of their work term
- Coordinate professional development for all staff and students that supports the ECLC’s strategic plan

What we are looking for:

- Post-secondary degree in a related field (Adult Education, Human Services, Human Resources, Leadership, or equivalent)
- At least 3 years of experience mentoring or supervising others
- Knowledge of Trauma Informed Practices and/or Psychological Health & Safety
- Passion for mentoring students or new professionals
- Experience in the legal sector would be considered an asset
- Strong organizational, decision making, and time management skills
