The **School of Earth, Environment & Society (SEES**) is a large department within the **Faculty of Science**, focusing on teaching and research in the areas of geography, geology, environmental and earth sciences. **About the Position**

The Academic Department Manager III (ADM) is responsible for the strategic and operational management of a very large, complex academic department with multiple functions including graduate and undergraduate programming, fee for service facilities, labs, research institutes, centres, and external partnerships. This role is integral in driving the School’s strategy and ensuring alignment with the strategic vision of the University, influencing the culture within the School, reinforcing university values and shaping the direction of the School offerings with a forward-looking perspective.

Main functions of this role include providing administrative and operational leadership, visioning and strategic planning, and advising the Director and faculty members on financial and human resources, space, curriculum, academic planning, advising and scheduling, and other strategic matters. The ADM provides critical analysis of the School’s needs related to planning, resourcing and proposal development using detailed data analytics to develop and drive the School’s strategy. On a day-to-day basis, the ADM implements the policy decisions taken by the School, Faculty, or University with respect to undergraduate and graduate students, and research administration, represents the School and its programs on University-wide committees, and provides leadership and direction to the staff who provide service to students in the undergraduate and graduate programs.

Note that this is a temporary position to cover an employee leave of absence. There will be a handover period at the beginning and end of the contract.

**Core Accountabilities**

The Academic Department Manager is an integral leadership position that oversees a large portfolio with several complex areas. They are expected to have an incredible depth of knowledge and expertise in a wide variety of areas, including (but not limited to) the broad core accountabilities listed below:

- Independently manages the financial resources (operating, research, facilities/services, research institutes and centres) of the School.
- Plays a key role in advising the Director on strategic planning, not only in the respective School but also within the Faculty.
- Responsible for ensuring that the School is managed in an effective and efficient manner. The ADM develops, implements, monitors and evaluates all infrastructure activities of the School including staff recruitment, promotion, human resource, finance, research and teaching activities within the School.
- Has significant responsibility for managing human resources activity within the School, overseeing every aspect.
- Plays a key role in the area of physical resource management within the School.
- Responsible for managing the resources and infrastructure supporting education activities within the School and is heavily involved in academic planning, advising and development.
- Oversees the administrative support of research activity within the School. Expected to lead or participate in special projects and/or sit on committees as the School or faculty representative in potentially many areas both within the Faculty, the broader University and in the community.
- Broad understanding of research, finance, Faculty and University initiatives.
- Knowledge and experience interpreting policies, procedures, and guidelines.
- Demonstrated leadership and management skills and be a proven strategic and pragmatic thinker.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including outstanding verbal and written communication skills and a proven record of demonstrated tact, judgment, and diplomacy.
- Must be organized, a long-range planner and an accomplished problem-solver, able to quickly assess situations and individuals and lead solutions.
- Demonstrated ability to make independent decisions and to build consensus.
- Proven track record of successful relationship-building is essential as this role must work effectively and collaboratively across Faculties and departments, with various internal and external stakeholders.
