As an Articling Student/Patent Agent Trainee you will work in a hybrid setting and your role will prepare you for the patent agent qualifying examination (and possible fulltime employment with PCK).

**POSITION**
- Your Articling Principal will be Andrew Currier, cofounder of PCK and CEO of PCK Intellectual Property. The Articling Student will perform professional legal work and provide timely legal assistance on intellectual property matters and general legal matters.

**THE OPPORTUNITY**
- Personal mentoring from a team of seasoned patent agents and patent lawyers
- Preparing patentability opinions
- Exposure to patent commercialization including licensing and litigation support
- Researching and writing on recent case law relating to developing issues in intellectual property for Canadian Patent Law (textbook), and for the company website blog, the PCK IP Reporter, as needed
- Experience international practice of patent law including USA, Canada, Europe and Asia
- Preparing patent related correspondence and maintaining patent files
- Building/maintaining successful client relationships
- Further development of written and oral advocacy skills
- Attending client intake meetings and invention disclosure sessions
- Attending startup conferences and participate in other business development initiatives to meet potential new clients
- Provide legal research support for intellectual property litigation matters from time to time
- Participate in startup client outreach and provide pro bono legal services including participating in seminars relating to intellectual property
- Draft and review other legal documents as required for lawyers, patent agents, and trademark agents
- Conduct legal research and maintains awareness of current provincial and federal legislation and regulations that may impact PCK clients
- Any other tasks that may be assigned

**THE SKILL SET**
- Technical background in engineering, computer science or related field
- Appreciation for a science and engineering workplace culture. Demonstrated interest in intellectual property, particularly in patent law.
- Collaborative and teamwork approaches preferred
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Strong and passionate written communication skills with the ability to structure information clearly, concisely, and logically, in technical writing, persuasive writing, and informative writing
- Strong oral communication and client management skills, with the ability to assess a client’s legal situation, ascertain client objectives, identify relevant legal issues, and to communicate information clearly and concisely; hands-on legal client interaction experience preferred
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team of lawyers, patent and trademark agents, and law clerks

**BENEFITS**
- Compensation: $75,000-$80,000 per annum (depending on experience) prorated according to term.
