Course Information
This course presents the fundamentals of lighting and acoustic design in buildings. Subjective responses to light and sound are explored, and simple calculations are used to evaluate spatial acoustic and lighting performance. Natural lighting processes and energy management techniques are investigated. Fundamentals of acoustic separation are presented. Students will analyze case studies of a variety of room types, including interior office spaces, public galleries and performance spaces that present opportunities to evaluate sound and light in various applications. Model testing of room acoustic performance and lighting will be introduced.

Estimated Number of Students: 120 students
a) A part-time hourly appointment/ one semester is for less than 9 hours in any one semester.
PLEASE NOTE: Pursuant to the University's and as a condition of employment, all successful candidates will be required to either submit valid proof of vaccination against COVID-19 or receive a . Course delivery in Fall 2024/Winter 2025 will be online, in-person or hybrid at the sole discretion of the hiring unit. Candidates hired for in-person courses will be required to carry out their teaching on campus. Candidates teaching remotely are required to have access to the appropriate technology, i.e. computer with camera and microphone and high-speed internet.
Qualifications
Evidence may be requested for all categories.
Education
Applicants must possess an accredited degree in Architecture (B.Arch., M.Arch. or equivalent).
Applicants with an advanced degree in the field of architecture, building science, management, or related fields may be given preference.
Experience
Applicants must have demonstrated experience in architectural design with experience of addressing complex lighting and acoustics issues.
A record of research and publication relevant to acoustic and/or lighting design is preferred.
Currency
Applicants must demonstrate current understanding of the architectural field and of the particular topics related to this course through professional practice, publications, and/or participation in relevant conferences (within the past five years).
Current DAS CUPE 1 Lecturers are expected to provide an updated currency report to be considered for contract lecturer positions as per article 17.(h) of the collective agreement.
Teaching Skills
Applicants should have demonstrated experience in teaching in an accredited architecture program within the past three years.
Applicants must have demonstrated ability to teach effectively within a lecture format and small group situations in a University environment.
Applicants without teaching experience, but with an exceptional record of practice may be considered for this posting.
Applicants should demonstrate commitment to inclusive teaching and awareness of EDI priorities, including but not limited to demonstrated ability to make learning accessible and inclusive for a diverse student population; and incorporating course materials and/or guest lecturers to provide different knowledge, perspectives, lived experiences and worldviews.
