The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic is part of the Nova Scotia Museum, in the Department of Communities, Culture, Tourism and Heritage. The Nova Scotia Museum (NSM) consists of 28 museum sites across the province. It is responsible for the provincial collection of over one million artifacts and specimens housed at museum sites and storage facilities across the province. **About Our Opportunity**:
The Interpretation Specialist coordinates with internal and external stakeholders, and team members, demonstrating excellent time management, communication, budgeting, procurement, leadership, and team building skills. They are on top of best practices and emerging trends in museum exhibition development and audience engagement. They continually assess the MMA’s inclusion of new, diverse, and alternative perspectives and techniques in interpretation, and of sustainable processes. The IS works closely with the curatorial and senior leadership of the MMA, participating in strategic and operational planning, and they perform other duties, as required. The IS’s work demonstrates a commitment to museum visitors and to their overall experience.
This position reports to the Manager of the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic.
**Primary Accountabilities**:
Accountabilities include, but are not limited to:
- Develop project-specific interpretation plans and specifications
- Coordinate the work of project teams for assigned projects
- Oversee the development and production of assigned interpretive programs and products
- Ensure the effectiveness of interpretive programs and products
- Assist with recruitment and delivery of personal programs, special events and other activities
- Assist with outreach and promotional activities, including media inquiries
- Assist with monitoring and maintaining exhibits, interpretive equipment and facilities
- Assist the senior MMA team in preparing strategic and operational plans
**Qualifications and Experience**:
**The Interpretation Specialist should have knowledge/experience**:
- Advancing principles of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Accessibility
- Historical research and project writing
- Interpretative programming techniques
- Practical knowledge of the maritime and marine sectors
- Theories and practices of Interpretation development
- Current trends in museum interpretation and programming
- Project management
- Writing for interpretation projects
- Artifact handling and conservation
**Assets Include**:
- Specific certification in interpretation and/or museum studies are considered assets.
- Sketch-up, CAD, 3D modelling, etc.
- Basic carpentry
- Digital design
