Job Summary

SCIE 113 is a First-Year Seminar course offered directly by the Faculty of Science where students study science in society, scientific process, and how to communicate scientific concepts in a small-group experience. The SCIE 113 Course Coordinator assists with planning, developing, and delivering the course, as well as assisting in curriculum development and course evaluation efforts.

Organizational Status

Reports to the Program Director of SCIE 113, who is a faculty member. Works collaboratively with other SCIE 113 personnel, as well as faculty and staff in the Dean’s office in the Faculty of Science, including the Associate Dean Academic. Interacts regularly with central service units such as Classroom Services.

Work Performed

Course scheduling and registration:

- Schedules course sections for SCIE 113 and other Faculty-level courses; monitors and manages waitlists.
- Coordinates with Classroom Services to schedule in-person sections in suitable classroom spaces.
- Assists with scheduling instructors and teaching assistants for each section.
- Resolves student queries and liaises with instructors and the SCIE 113 leadership.

Coordinates recruitment and hiring for faculty instructors, teaching assistants, and academic assistants:

- Coordinates instructor advertising, recruitment and appointments.
- Prepares offer letters for instructional appointments, including instructors and TAs.
- Schedules TA duties and manages any required changes to TA duties throughout the term.
- Anticipates course needs related to scheduling, staffing, and instructional support.
- Works with the Course Director to monitor and manage the course budget; identify and resolve discrepancy.

Communication
- Facilitates communications between SCIE 113 leadership, instructional faculty, and teaching assistants; manages logistics, resources, and course communication across the team.
- Resolves inquiries and manages a record of ongoing course logistics issues that need addressing.

Course Development and Management
- Assists SCIE 113 leadership in the development of course materials
- Manages learning technologies including but not limited to Canvas, OneDrive, MS Teams, TurnitIn, Padlet, and polling software (ex: iClicker Cloud, Mentimeter).
- Coordinates technology necessary for online teaching and learning including the use of Zoom, and recording platforms such as Panopto.
- Keeps current on new software and technology available to support hybrid course delivery; identifies additional tools for the effective instruction and assessment of students, and takes primary responsibility for assessing its feasibility; makes recommendations to the SCIE 113 leadership and leads in the deployment of teaching and learning technologies.
- Coordinates the administrative process for potential academic misconduct cases.
- Participates in the documentation and assessment of course-level policies and assists in developing and redesigning procedural guidelines and policies to meet educational and course goals.

Coordinates and supports multiple course-related tasks including but not limited to:

- Liaises with the Dean’s office to coordinate Student Experience of Instruction section assignments for instructors and TAs.
- Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) projects.
- Internal course evaluation.
- Coordinating events.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

Poor planning, organization, and errors in judgment, analysis, or when advising on or implementing changes to procedures, context or projects could result in failure to meet program objectives and could adversely impact students, TAs and faculty. Repercussions would involve failing to meet project goals and would adversely impact the quality of the student experience. In addition, errors could also compromise the integr
