Position Summary:
Under the general direction of the Director of Development, the incumbent is responsible for securing Special and Major Gifts ($25k-$99k) for the Schulich School of Music, developing and managing a portfolio of prospects, developing and building relationships with alumni around professional and social networks, and building and managing a network of fundraising volunteers. The Development Officer also leads and directs a comprehensive stewardship program and acts as a stewardship resource for partners within the development unit and across the Schulich School of Music.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Development (50%)- Manage a personal portfolio of prospects and donors for the Schulich School of Music (SSoM). Encourage and seek philanthropic support for SSoM and McGill. Formulate, recommend and implement cultivation, engagement, solicitation and stewardship strategies to secure gifts from the prospects portfolio.-
- Develop an in depth understanding of the SSoM’s key fundraising priorities and promote these priorities effectively to prospects.-
- Identify, cultivate and solicit prospects capable of contributing gifts to SSoM and University priorities. Through personal visits, identify and qualify individuals to determine capacity, inclination and interests in providing support to the SSoM. Evaluate and recommend appropriate next steps for newly qualified potential donors and current donors.-
- Identify, recruit, train and manage a network of volunteers to assist with fundraising and alumni relations activities. Organize all schedules and follow-up communications to volunteers pre

- meetings. Maintain close communication and act as a SSoM liaison with volunteers.-
- Participate actively in McGill University Advancements events as part of an integrated approach to prospect identification, cultivation and stewardship.-
- Provide assistance and advice to the University community on all fundraising activities.-
- Generate written materials associated with the fundraising process, such as proposals, stewardship reports and general correspondence. Ensure that all communications materials be vetted and approved by the Director of Development and/or the necessary University partners.-
- Participate in Prospect Management System; file timely and appropriate contact reports, recording of proposals, etc.-
- Work in close collaboration with colleagues in the McGill University Advancement Office and SSoM based fundraising operations.-
- Undertake in-depth analysis of complex problems/issues, articulate alternatives and recommend solutions.-
- Qualify donors, obtain appointments, qualify and solicit McGill Annual Fund/Leadership gifts as a part of strategic efforts to build the pipeline of donors at the $25K+ levels.-
- Undertake special projects as assigned ie. approved in memoriam gifts and facilitating crowdfunding by students in order to develop a more robust ecosystem to cultivate parents.- Stewardship (50%)- In conjunction with Central Donor Relations, manage Stewardship Programs for the SSoM.-
- Manage the review of all new gift agreements of $25K+ to the SSoM and develop appropriate stewardship and recognition strategies.-
- Manage and oversee the donor acknowledgement program, ensuring timely and appropriate acknowledgements and regular refresh of content and assess if the programs being implemented meet the needs of the donors, in collaboration with the Central Donor Relations team.-
- Manage and analyze customized stewardship planning activities for the SSoM’s top donors; implement customized stewardship activities to deepen donor engagement and strengthen relationships between the University’s top donors and prospects and McGill-
- Utilize the Stewardship Profile to plan, track, and document stewardship tasks and occurrences, consistent with University-wide standards.-
- Identify the need for and coordinate personalized stewardship outreach to top priority donors including initiating general communication and routine contact, invitations to meet with beneficiaries of support (Chair holders, department heads, student award winners, etc.).-
- Develop and implement the Dean’s Call list program, ensuring that priority donors have regular contact with the Dean.-
- Conduct an annual assessment of donor support of SSoM programs to determine the need for programmatic impact reporting; coordinate the development of these re
