Job Summary

The New Frontiers Research Cluster (Thrivers) is looking for a highly motivated and organized Peer Leader and Research Assistant to assist with and support general project logistics, community engagement, and guide all research activities, including the development of data collection processes, data collection and analysis, and integrated Knowledge Translation.

Thrivers’ fosters mutual and reciprocal learning, mobilizing the strengths and resources of all members toward generating new health knowledge relevant to people and communities impacted by the criminal justice system, and inspiring social action to improve the health and wellness of individuals impacted by the criminal justice system. As such, having people with lived experience of incarceration on our team is invaluable; their perspectives are a priority in shaping the outcomes of our work.

This position supports our community-based, participatory, and strengths-based aims to reframe the criminal justice system to improve health and justice for (and with) peoples disproportionately affected by current systems.

Organizational Status

This position is within the New Frontiers (Thrivers) project, which operates out of the Critical Research in Health and Health Inequities (CRiHHI), in the School of Nursing, University of British Columbia. This peer researcher position will report to Dr. Helen Brown and Kelsey Timler.

Work Performed- The Peer Co-Researcher (Research Assistant) will work closely with the Thrivers’ leadership and report to the Research Manager. This person will perform duties contributing to the overall success of the project by providing support in: Supports each aspect of the project, based on the invaluable lived experience of incarceration- Assists senior level staff with the design and development of community-based Knowledge Translation and dissemination strategies-
- Coordinates and liaises with co-Investigators, service providers, and other Peer Co-Researchers, including providing leadership on network building and expanding scope and reach of research intervention.- Researches, coordinates and performs content development and activity design for Thrivers’ events in support of Thrivers’ data collection, knowledge dissemination and exchange, including co-leading community gathering goal development and processes to support the health and wellbeing of other Indigenous women impacted by the prison system.- Plans and performs data collection, utilizing complex qualitative and community-based procedures or techniques - including interview guide development, conducting semi-structured interviews and focus groups with other previously incarcerated women, and co-development of novel data collection processes that align with shared values of Indigenous data sovereignty and trauma-informed research processes; troubleshoots problems and provides leadership on trauma informed, community-based and Indigenous-led feminisms - and the ways these concepts and processes shape all aspects of research processes; collects, records, analyses and interprets qualitative data in both independent and collaborative ways.- Works in cooperation with other members of the research team and communicate verbally and/or in writing regarding work progress.- Attends conferences, dialogue events, and panels with team, including ongoing training and leadership on knowledge sharing to disrupt academic norms and knowledge hierarchies from a place of Indigenous feminist thought creation and Participatory Action Research.- Plans and performs community-based training to support ongoing engagement, networking and skills development with the wider community of women leaving prison; this may include training on data collection methods, research ethics processes, knowledge translation, and program development.- Performing other related duties as required, based on RA leadership and decision-making, as well as specific needs and goals of the project.

This position requires incumbents to work collaboratively with the Thrivers’ team to meet research objectives and other related duties as required.
