Job Summary

The research assistant (RA) will support the principal investigator (Dr Angela Devlin) and other research staff and trainees in the Devlin lab on diabetes and nutrition research projects. We have several mouse models of diabetes and nutrition that we use to address research questions about nutrient requirements during development and the impact on cardiometabolic diseases (diabetes, vascular disease). The RA will oversee the administrative operations, workflow, and finances of the Devlin Lab and the clinical research projects. The RA will support other staff (clinical research coordinator, RAs) and trainees (summer students, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows). This research is supported by funding from CIHR, NSERC, and BC Children's Hospital Foundation.

Organizational Status

Reports to Dr. Angela Devlin. Works closely with research trainees, associates, assistants, and coordinators in the Devlin lab.

Work Performed

  • Coordinates the day-to-day operations of the Devlin Lab including managing inventory of supplies.
  • Coordinates ethics applications, including preparation and submission of documents, reporting, and maintenance of records.
  • Plans and performs experiments including collection of tissue from mouse models, and physiological, biochemical and genomic analyses (RNAseq, epigenetic analyses). Troubleshoots problems and interprets results. Develops SOPs for the procedures.
  • Assists senior staff and trainees (research associate, postdoctoral fellow, clinical research coordinator) with design of experiments and the development of new techniques.
  • Writes reports and prepares research results for lab meetings, grant applications, and presentations.
  • Provides training to trainees (undergraduate and graduate students) on the use of equipment and standard operating procedures in the lab.
  • Coordinates, monitors and ensures the implementation and enforcement of laboratory safety rules and procedures.
  • Sets up, tests, operates and maintains common laboratory and other equipment
  • Fosters excellent communication in a collaborative environment.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

Exercises a considerable amount of judgment, responsibility, and initiative in the timely and responsible management of the Devlin lab and clinical diabetes research projects.

Decision Making and Accountability

While the work may be of a complex nature, tasks are assigned and the employee plans and schedules his/her own work.

Supervision Received

Oversight will be provided by Dr Devlin. Receives detailed instructions on the assignment of new duties.

Supervision Given

Will supervise other research assistants (tech 1/2), trainees, summer students, and work learn students.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completion of a BSc in biomedical related field and 3 years of experience working as a research assistant or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Or completion of an MSc in a biomedical related field and a minimum of at least 1year related experience working as a research assistant or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience working in epigenetics and/or diabetes research.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment.
