Reporting to the Museum Supervisor, the Curator of Collections is responsible for the professional management of the museum’s collection and exhibition programme. The incumbent will manage the collection both in storage and on display and is responsible for developing and implementing plans for exhibitions, collections management, conservation and research related to the Museum’s collection. The Curator of Collections also participates in museum administration, policy development and budgeting as assigned. This position has limited supervision duties.

**Responsibilities**:
Exhibitions:

- Responsible for all aspects of exhibition development including planning, design, research, interpretive text, budget, staffing, set-up and take down, loans, insurance;
- Organizes an exhibition schedule for multiple spaces encompassing permanent, temporary and travelling exhibits;
- Works collaboratively and engages with community partners to gather exhibit material and information when required;
- Conducts primary source research in support of the Museum’s mandate and documents the historical collection.

Collections Management and Conservation:

- Oversees all aspects of collections management for the Museum’s collection;
- Responsible for collection records systems and maintaining the collections management system;
- Determines and implements methods for preservation and conservation of items which may include art, artifacts, and/or documentary records;
- Performs or works with appropriate specialists to undertake preventative conservation measures such as monitoring conditions and pest management;
- Conducts and supervises research involving the analysis of materials, storage, treatment, display, transportation, and environmental conditions;
- Collaborates with staff to develop appropriate housings and exhibit mounts;
- Evaluates potential donations and makes recommendations for acquisition and deaccessioning.

Administration:

- Participates in the formulation of procedures, standards, budgets, policies, and long-term plans;
- Supports the Museum Supervisor in the day-to-day operation of the Museum;
- Provides a senior staff presence in the absence of the Museum Supervisor;
- Oversees contracted professional services including appraisers and conservators;
- Supervises part-time curatorial staff, interns and volunteers;
- Researches and writes grant proposals.

**Qualifications/Skills**:

- Master’s degree in Museum Studies, Art History, Visual Arts or related field.
- Minimum of 3 years of related experience in exhibition and collections management;
- Thorough knowledge of standards for community museums in Ontario;
- Ability to monitor museum operations, exhibition spaces, work and storage areas accordingly;
- Theoretical and practical knowledge of collections management, conservation standards and preservation approaches;
- Knowledge of TMS or similar collections management software;
- Working knowledge of processing acquisitions;
- Well-developed 3D and 2D design skills;
- Superior research, writing and editing skills;
- Excellent organizational, communication and visual skills;
- Ability to multi-task and efficiently implement projects;
- Strong interpersonal skills required to maintain positive relationships with co-workers and all other stakeholders across role responsibilities.
